American Masters - Rod Serling

Rod Serling: Submitted...

...Excellent PBS documentary.

His TV legacy doesn't just include the Twilight Zone but stretches back to the days of live television.
The documentary is done in b&w, maintaining the tone of his work.

Wow, never knew that... eek

Rod Serling fascinates me for some reason...I think it's because for the longest time I only associated him with The Twilight Zone as its spooky narrator. He seems so enigmatic...

I love this genius man...not only because he blended his commentaries on society within his art, but also because he found a way to keep doing so during such a conservative time. I'm glad he's finally getting the recognition he deserves for making such an impact. I'm sure he made people think about controversial social issues without them even realizing it.

In the case of Twilight Zone storylines, because it was "fantasy", he got away with having space aliens or strange situations say the things the censors would have objected to via humans in a traditional dramatic show.

Yes. The American Masters is a very good series.
I started a similar post on the music board based on their Aretha Franklin segment.
The episode included some really great footage of her playing piano.
That's a skill she has that the casual fan is generally unaware of.

He was absolutely brilliant. The Twilight Zone is probably my 2nd favorite show ever. I love how he used science fiction as a medium for relaying messages of morality. thumbs up!

This special (and a bio of Rod Serling) inspired me to start writing my own screenplays - this was back in the mid-90's. He was such a talented writer who excelled during the days of live broadcasts, not to mention "The Twilight Zone" and later, "Night Gallery".

BTW, my fave "Twilight Zone" episode is the one where the guy gets his wish to be the only surviving human and left alone with books. Alas, he mistakenly breaks his only pair of glasses. The episode was pure genius.
