I think that giving in to their fear is what drove them to construct the false reality as a way to protect the innocence. The one character who was able to overcome her fear, (the blind girl) was the one who was able to find a freedom that was unthinkable to the others who remained enslaved by the myth because of their fears. There was some fine acting in that movie as well. I hated, hated, hated, that he played the retarded character for cheap laughs. At least that's what the packed house did when i saw it on release. It made me feel like shit. They laughed? Adrian Brody played the hell outta that role. The stabbing scene really got to me. I didn't see anything to laugh at. A true life superhero discovering his talents (I heard it described as the first page of the first comic book for a hero). It was ingenius. I agree. And the whole notion of society's unconscious need for superheroes dating all the way back to ancient mythology is interesting as well. Not only Samuel L. Jackson's character but also the wife and the son in their own way needed Dunn to be their superhero. Only when he embraced his true self was he able to overcome his sadness and fulfill his mission, even in bed with his wife. The part about how the good vs evil characters are portrayed could be a whole 'nother conversation and that ending was so horrific it floored me. The Village to me was his best. I'm surprised by people who do not like it. I love the symbolism and the mutitple levels of story telling in the village. How the most innocent of the characters played by Adrian Brody, commits the worst crime, and how they had to invent myth (i.e. religion) to protect themselves, but they are slaves to the myth. I also think of how they try desperately to protect innocense but in some way, innocense is lost in the entire effort. To me, it's his most brilliant. See, that's exactly how I feel about "Signs." "The Village" was ruined for me by the time I saw it, so I can't say whether knowing the twist didn't make that film stupid to me from the beginning. It NEVER occured to me that "Signs" was stupid because the aliens couldn't figure out that they were hurt by water. I thought the point was that the HUMANS didn't know they could be hurt by water. The idea that everything is important, that the good things and bad things that happen to us all happen for a reason (kind of a "Run Lola Run" lesson) was all brought home during that scene. Plus, that scene with the alien running across the driveway in the birthday party footage was SCURRY. Brought back memories of that famous Bigfoot footage that scurred the living shit outta me as a kid.

Adrian's performance was not meant to be for laughs. It's a shame movie goers in America have digressed so far. His character is a representation of all that they "Elders" where trying to protect--Innocense. He is meant to be the ironic character in the movie, and his death is the most tragic, becuase largely, it wasn't his fault. [Edited 7/16/06 14:14pm]

I also think of how they try desperately to protect innocense but in some way, innocense is lost in the entire effort. To me, it's his most brilliant. I can totally agree with this. I entirely enjoyed The Village and have watched it a number of times. I can understand why some people would not like it - the marketing made it out to be something it really wasn't, the story and it's elements are not shallow hollywood material and actually require a bit of thought, and the pacing is a bit 'slow' for people that like music video style editing, but I thought it was an extremely solid effort. Signs is my 2nd fave of his... the rest fall quite a bit lower with Unbreakable as 3rd, and Sixth Sense last.

Well, they'd have to be the dumbest aliens in existence if water can kill them and the attack a planet that is 90% water..lol ...Hell, no need to hide in the basement or board up the windows...just turn on the sprinklers and you're good to go. Yes! Thank you! Now, no matter how great Signs might be... this one single point destroys the film utterly for me! How could something so stupid be put into the script! This is 1000 times worse than the Matrix's idea for using human beings as batteries... I could look past that.
