M Night Shyamalan

Any M Night Shyamalan fans in the house? I think he's a brilliant director and a helluva storyteller. His plots are very intriguing and he keeps you guessing about what's going to happen next. I hate formula movies where you can figure out the whole thing 20 minutes into the movie.

What's your favorite?

Stuart Little
The Sixth Sense
Signs
Unbreakable
The Village

I'm gonna go with Unbreakable because it's an interesting take on the whole superhero thing.

I'm looking forward to Lady In The Lake too. cool

He's Ok. I find his movies good but just short of great. He normally disappoints me right at the end. sigh

"The Village" sucked, but I loved "Signs." I can't believe how many people I know hated "Signs" but I think it's his best, most thought-provoking movie. "The Sixth Sense" was of course great, but I haven't been able to watch it a second time since I know what's going on.

I'm looking forward to "Lady in the Water." I've read two reviews so far, and just like his other movies, the opinions are very polarized. One review says it's his best, scariest film yet. The other review said it was a big mess.

Me too. I didn't get the excitement of the sixth sense. The village was ok.

But for some reason I'm really excited about the new one. The teaser trailor was simply gorgeous.

I agree. Except in the case of The Sixth Sense. That had touches of brilliance. The Village was all hype and no punch. It sucked.

With signs I was definately left disappointed. About midway through the movie just fell apart for me.

Stuart Little? I didn't know he did that. That was cute.

Unbreakable wasn't as good as it could have been or should have been. Not sure where that one went wrong.

His movies are enjoyable, but he usually misses the mark somehow...I loved "Sixth Sense" and never saw the ending coming, but more than a few others have said they figured it out rather early..."The Village" stunk in a bunch of ways, and the twist at the end was somewhat lame (and unfortunately it was leaked like a mf beforehand)..."Signs" was really good for the most part, but the ending sucked HUGE. I mean, water kills the aliens??...wtf? lol...So a 12 year old kid with a garden hose could take out the entire alien race if he wanted to?..lol..please. "Unbreakable" was pure crap and slow as hell, but it had the best "twist" ending of all the movies...

Yes the end of Signs was STOOOOOPID!!!

The best (and most deceiving) thing about The Village was the trailer. That movie was horrific. He should have had his director's card pulled for that one!

I'm not sure about this new one. The trailer looks kinda cheesy. I'm afraid that M. Night is a fluke and he accidently made ONE great movie.

I liked Signs but I actually preferred The Village. It was an interesting study about living in a reality based on fear and all its ramifications.

Oopsie! I meant Lady In The Water. biggrin I seldom agree with film critics and reviewers of movies even though I read lots of them.

Nah, he was the co-writer or something of the sort.

I'm a fan of his story telling ability as a director and writer (bit of a crub actor mind you confused ) nod Virtually all my friends loved "Sixth Sense" but most of them weren't too keen on the others. I really like them all. There's something great about all the ones you've mentioned.

I think he's very formulaic, but a good story teller despite.

The Village to me was his best. I'm surprised by people who do not like it.
I love the symbolism and the mutitple levels of story telling in the village.
How the most innocent of the characters played by Adrian Brody, commits the worst crime, and how they had to invent myth (i.e. religion) to protect themselves, but they are slaves to the myth. I also think of how they try desperately to protect innocense but in some way, innocense is lost in the entire effort. To me, it's his most brilliant.

I think it would have been better as a book. The actual film didn't do justice to the story or the idea behind it.

Unbreakable was his masterpiece.

A true life superhero discovering his talents (I heard it described as the first page of the first comic book for a hero). It was ingenius.

Sixth Sense was alright but overrated, and like others have said it has no replay value. An ending doesn't make a movie.

Signs was downright poor. The most civilized alien race in the universe, capable of travelling for light years to colonize a planet that is 90% what will kill them, and they do it naked????? I won't even get into their inability to open a pantry door. Awful awful movie. And the "faith" lesson in the movie, the ultimate point of it, didn't even make sense.

After that, I found no need to watch the village. I'll wait for the reviews for lady in the lake

well, his distributor broke up their long-term partnership with him over the newest film. So, this could be really bad or really great, I guess. shrug

See, that's what I mean when I say he's a helluva storyteller. You picked up on a whole 'nother layer within the story. I think that giving in to their fear is what drove them to construct the false reality as a way to protect the innocence. The one character who was able to overcome her fear, (the blind girl) was the one who was able to find a freedom that was unthinkable to the others who remained enslaved by the myth because of their fears.

There was some fine acting in that movie as well.
