You almost nullify your whole statement there by saying you use Apple software for its looks. Not that I don't believe you, just pointing that out.

It's not worth arguing. Some people prefer the other OS, I really couldn't give that much of a shit - I was drunk and angry when I wrote that post above, even though I agree with some of what I wrote, there's no point trying to convince someone otherwise - computer usage is acheived by the user and no user is really willing to totally change (just look at the amount of people who go back to mac/pc having used the other).

How does that nullify anything? When you make music or graphic designs you are trying to achieve a degree of aesthetic perfection. why not make the process pleasing too? And why do you think PC's slowly attempt to incorporate all the stylistics and convenience of macs every year? I bought a little condo because it pleased me aesthetically (after looking for months and months) to fulfill a function of shelter... I work in media because it's more fun than working a corporate culture 9-5 job, I use final cut pro and a mac for dvd/video/protools because it's more fun. I use a PC for adobe programs (cheaper processing power), and 3D animation.

nod Good on you - I did the same for my design exams. I'm not being harsh or criticising you in any way, sorry if it came across that way.

You know I get the impression that you haven't been following along... first you respond to a thread about a choice between notebooks by claiming you built one for yourself years ago on $300 and now you apparently are too busy to notice that I was responding to a comment talking about BUILT-IN/BUNDLED software in Windows/Vista...

So, before you talk about being silly, please understand what you're responding to first...That's certainly better than to go out on a tangent about an issue that doesn't apply to the original post and has no bearing on her choice.

[comment removed - Tom] You responded to a message posted by spookymuffing that was quoting a year as referred to by ME. And it makes absolutely NO SENSE to respond by starting to talk about bundled software when the original point was clearly about media production. A great number of high-cost multimedia programs was already mentioned way before I stepped in and it was those that the discussion I chose to partake in was dealing with anyway. So please follow the thread YOURSELF.

I already apologized about not understanding that those very specs posted were supposed to be for a laptop (were they? It supports BOTH standards of RAM! Quite fascinating for a non-user configurable machine), The conversation at that point was clearly not dealing with just confining the issue to laptops only, and sally just posted the specs on the ordered machine. And stop twisting my words that I would have talked about "building a notebook for 300$" which is clearly not what I said. But go on and act like a child without the capacity for tertiary level of thinking if you really must insist.

From what I'v heard here, Sallysassalot sounds like a typical "home" user and they benefit GREATLY from software that would be bundled or easy to acquire.

I have not made a single answer to any of sally's personal posts on multimedia production. That was a discussion taking place at the sidelines of this thread and not dealing with the top post at all anyway. Besides it's clear that sally has already bought a computer based on the information gathered from forums. And I do doubt it that it would be a bad choice by any means.

Many novice users buy Macs and end up doing things with the included software which they would otherwise never dream about if it wasn't right in front of them and easy to understand.

Which perfectly describes the target user group for the marketing department of Macintosh computers, thank you for enforcing those views.

Windows XP is the same visually, as it was when it was released in 2001. They haven't really changed it. I know Macs lead the way with the GUI, but I think it's not really far to say that anyone else that spruces up their interface from time to time is simply ripping of Macs.

Thank you for not removing the entire post, a decent moderating decision. (altough we do have emoticons that say the same thing and they're actually enabled by the org itself? confuse)

We do but they're usually used lightheartedly, it felt like the discussion was getting a little heated, that's all.

Nova, I chose to ignore the extraneous bits of the discussion and focus on the particular comment of the message I was responding to at the time. Which went out of it's way to mention built-in software. It seems you want to make this all about you and you want me to respond in a 'special way' that pleases YOU. I'm sorry, I'm not going to do that. So, please, take whatever attitude you'd like to inject in your posts and aim it elsewhere. It's entirely unneeded here and your childishness will now be ignored.

Which perfectly describes the target user group for the marketing department of Macintosh computers, thank you for enforcing those views.

...and there's not a thing wrong with focusing on that market. Macs are great machines that, thanks to OS X, can easily serve both ends of the market. Advanced users without silly biases already know or can find out and make informed decisions for themselves, they don't need a lot of fluffy bunny marketing.

i meant to post this the other day when i was looking through consumer report/review articles online. it was a response to one of the many glowing reviews for the new macbook (every review was glowing, by the way). i thought it was funny enough.

Don't use Apple!

They are too expensive, like Ferrari's. Thats why everybody doesn't drive Ferrari's.

Important software like Sober.Win32 and Blaster simply don't run. And the error reporting is lacking, I haven't seen an error report for ages.

And the user base is restricted to creative, innovative, intelligent cliques.. you know, the vast minority, and we all know minorities are bad.

For the sake of the rest of us, please don't switch.

Thankyou.

2.0 GHz. They had 2.16, but I didn't feel it was super-necessary considering my computer habits and lifestyle. I don't do too much high-end production and the like.

i've never lost anything important from any PC i've ever owned. i've dealt with macs crashing on me more than i've ever dealt with PCs crashing on me. go figure.

and this is why i enjoy reading your posts!

pc or not, dell is the devil. i've never had so many problems with an electronic item than i have with all my dell brand stuff. from the laptop right down to the router and further down to the wireless card. and then i can't understand a thing tech support is saying to me AND i have to pay a halfhourly rate to repeat "i'm sorry, can you say that again? i didn't quite get it" for 20 minutes. fishslap

pc is cool but dell drives me bonkers!

i've only had my dell laptop for about 6 months, though fortunately that's what we use at my job and we have an IT/helpdesk department trained to service dell PCs. yay! thankfully nothing's happened with my laptop yet...

The answer is pretty easy.

Unless you are making music or doing extensive graphic animation or something like that...go with what you like and know. They are almost equal in terms of speed and processing. True, less virus' exist for mac...but that is changing as macs become more prevelant.

Now if you ARE making music or doing heavy processing with graphics and such...I say go with Mac.

So far, it really isn't. What we do see an increase of, since Macs are getting more attention of late, is media organizations and anti-virus software authors creating a bunch of hype about "possible threats" or "Lab room examples".

How many viruses are there for OS X out in the wild, self-propgating wildly on the Internet? Answer = NONE.

OS 9 and prior releases had a few.

Symantec claims that there are 72,605 viruses/worms and their variants in the latest antivirus update for Windows.

I totally agree about Dell. I've had to service a heck of a lot of Dells, and also HPs, in the last few years. If I was going the PC route, personally I wouldn't mind a Sony, though. They have some fairly nice offerings (or at least they did the last time I checked). I just can't take long hours working with XP, though. Vista *should* be a better option than XP, depending on how they configure a few things in the final release.

Whoa! No need to get it all in a bunch. There are a few around, but not a lot. I wasn't really refering to OS X or whatever. Really there isn't much point to make a virus for a mac...and that was my point. When Macs start to be prevelant in the workplace or in gov't agencies, we'll be seeing some more. But really until then, there isn't muych point in making a virus that'll dump a students term paper...or destroy a music file. lol

my dell has problems with both. the software on my boyfriend's mac is much easier to use and does what its supposed to do smoothly but that could be because the computer itself sucks. if i'm running itunes and have 2 windows open, things are noticably slower. on top of that the dell router i have craps out...or is it the wireless card...or both? tech support at dell is awful and in 3 1/2 years i've had two dell computers die on me, one irreparably.

if you go pc, get a lenova or sony. they really are leaders in pc world.
