I am so sorry! But I'm also immensely relieved that you acted so quickly and that you had a competant and compassionate vet staff so close.

I will definately keep Fang in my prayers--you too!

I have NEVER heard of stomach flipping. Does this happen just to his breed or are all digs suseptible to this?

A horrible story. I've just told my mum about the symptoms you described so she knows what to do if it ever happens to our dog. I hope Fang is fine, and I'm sure he will be.

He impresses me all the time too. That's why he's my older bro. thumbs up!

I definitely agree that his route was more respectable, and I normally try to be that way too, but I'll be damned if someone says something bad about my Fang.

What is stomach flipping? I have never heard of that before.

You know when a hose folds over on itself and the liquid can't escape and pressure builds up? That's what this is like. The stomach rotates in the body cavity and turns upside down. The esophagus and small intestine pinch and the contents of the stomach can't move. Gas and pressure build up until eventually something gives. Usually the stomach tears. It's some hardcore shit.

It's actually very rare in basset hounds. And since this happened and I've been talking to people about this, I'm surprised at how many have never heard of it.

I found this...

Typical breeds affected are Akita, Great Dane, German Shepherd, St. Bernard, Irish Wolfhound, and Irish Setter. Sighthounds, Doberman Pinschers, Weimaraners, Bloodhounds, other similar breeds, and large, deep-chested mixed breeds are also affected.

What I can gather from my reading and from my vet's advice is to monitor activity after eating. Perhaps consider giving 2 smaller meals instead of one large one. Spread out treats and water througout the day and maybe keep them separate from meal time. Don't let them play too hard for 2 hours after eating a large meal. I wouldn't freak out like it's going to happen at any moment. It can come out of nowhere, but in my 22 years of having dogs, I've never seen it. And all of my dogs have been larger chested dogs than little Fang. But most importantly, if you notice trouble breathing, vomiting in assosciation with a bloated abdomen, by all means get your pet in to someone immediately. That's the best you can do - detecting it early and getting proper medical attention. A lot of people aren't aware of emergency veterinary facilities in their area. It's always a good idea to know where these are and have their number at the ready.

In Ohio. There probably are vets around like him here, I just haven't found them yet. smile

How close are you to Michigan? There's a phenomenal 24 hour hospital in Southfield, probably only an hour/hour and a half drive from the Ohio border. If you ever run into an emergency and don't trust the care where you are, or can't wait through the night, I would strongly recommend this clinic. I'll note you the name, address and any other info I can dig up. They're awesome.

Actually, I'm not too far from Michigan (I've driven to Detroit already on several occassions for a Prince concert, so I'm not against the idea of taking one of my cats to Michigan if the situation warranted it). How far away is Southfield from the Detroit area?

she kept throwing up...this was when she was in her late 80's...the doctor said her stomach was twisting, and had to be tacked into place to keep from twisting.

omg Ouch! Having your stomach tacked into place sounds painful, but probably not any more painful than having it twist up on you.

Reading this thread,I just had this thought: can a cat's stomach also flip? Not to sound silly, but since a dog and a human's stomach can flip, I'm wondering if it can also happen in cats too. hmmm That would be a good question to ask my vet next time I take one of my cats to the vet for their booster shots/checkup.

You must not own a dog or have a beloved pet...yes, those of us that have pets that are literally part of our family will do EVERYTHING we can to save their lives and make them comfortable.

Get well soon, Fang.... hug
