My grandmother (not a dog) had it happened too. Surgery corrected it, and she lived to be 95. Your dog will be fine too. Soon he'll be back to humping legs and stuff

Moonbeam said: I completely lost it last night. As Tracy mentioned, I was asleep when I was given the phone and I literally woke up to a nightmare. I didn't cope...at all. Our family has endured so much loss, and I manage to have faith in spite of it. I felt like I was being mocked for it, but I prayed for a miracle anyway, and God provided one. It was insanely difficult to not be there- he's my little boy and he means a great deal to our family. He is one of the few sources of joy we've had over the past 2 and a half years and his happiness and well-being has been one of the only things we've felt that we have done right. It would have been completely devastating to lose him, particularly because I would not have been able to go back due to visa issues.
All I can say is that God provided the miracle we so desperately needed. This is one instance where hope and faith have been rewarded with a happy result, and I could not be more warmed by it. I keep saying "Praise Jesus" and "Thank the Lord" over and over again. I'm completely exhausted from it all, but I know that in spite of my inability to be there, Fang is in the very best possible hands in Nathan's, Nikki's and Dr. Meadows'. Nathan has this amazing gift with animals that makes me very jealous. Animals seem to sense that he has this gift as they keep having crises in his presence. He always seems to know how to handle it. My brother, the shepherd. Hi sweetie, As sappy as it sounds, I just have to say that the love between you and Nathan is an awesome thing to witness and brings tears to my eyes. How could Fang not be okay with a daddy and uncle like you two? Love like that is where the living God is truly found. Prince, in you I found a kindred spirit...Rest In Paradise.

psychodelicide said: Poor Fang, I will definitely pray for him and hope that he makes a full recovery. The emergency vet hospital that you took him to sounds wonderful in that they worked through their lunch and cancelled their other appointments so that they could take care of Fang right away. That says a lot to me. It's so rough when one of our animals gets sick.
He's absolutely remarkable. I brought a dying cat into him last year that he was miraculously able to save. He said that it was the closest he's ever seen an animal to death that actually lived. I've brought in injured opossums and birds and he'll take anything in and give it his best shot. I've even known him to go to the site of an accident to try to save a deer or whatnot. The guy's extremely gifted. And he's at most 35, probably younger.

When your mom called and let us know his surgery had gone well I just burst into tears of relief. Ian had just prayed again for a miracle a couple of minutes before we got the call that he was ok. Thank God. Fang is an awesome dog, and I am so glad to know him. I knew he's a strong hearty dog, but given his age, and how many dogs don't get through such a thing, it didn't look good. Your mom called at 3:30 am and poor Ian at first thought he was dreaming, what a nightmare to wake up to. We were very worried, I am sooooo glad that Fang is on the mend. Nay, I am so sorry you had to go through this, and see Fang so ill, I cannot imagine what it is like to see your dog in such pain, I know you've gone through it a number of times, but it isn't something you ever get used to. Thank you for doing ALL you did to get him to those doctors and all, never blame yourself, all the animals who have been in your care have been better for it, you and Ian are amazing with your dogs. Fang is totally blessed to be have all of you. I love you, and I am so sorry all of you had to have yet another horrible scare. Thank God it sounds like he will be ok. We can all do with a miracle or two right now. Thanks for taking care of him, I'm so sorry Ian couldn't be there to share it with you. Yeah, I wasn't sure if it was the right thing to do to call you in the middle of the night. My mom wasn't gonna do it. But I knew that Ian would be even more upset if all of this was going on and he didn't know about it. So I told her to call. Fang and Ian have an extra special relationship, and when the rest of us would get frustrated with his drooling, spotting and hunting, Ian would be baby talking to him and engaging him in play. I'm the only one who doesn't strictly discipline him, but Ian's the one who is the most forgiving. I think if it was possible, he'd have shipped Fang over there by now. Thank you for your prayers and for calming Ian down. Because Ian hasn't had the fortune to be there during some crucial decisions in the past few years, I know how helpless he feels at times. But by talking to him and talking with my mom, I know that kept him at least somewhat focused and from going completely mad. We've had too many losses to lose poor innocent Fang right now. We will break the 11 year old curse!

I'm glad you were able to get him in ASAP. You did the right thing, and there's absolutely no need to blame yourself. A little table scrap isn't going to do him any harm. And, of course, he's going to drink lots of water. It's summer, he's hot and he's active. All completely normal activities. I'm thinking positive thoughts for you and your pup - you do the very same thing! Blaming yourself isn't going to help you. You're a good papa. Thank you everyone for the encouragement. They did find a lot of stomach contents when they did the surgery, so I'm sure that didn't help. But the doctor said it's generally assosciated with excessive water drinking, which Fang definitely did yesterday morning. From now on, they want me to restrict his activity 2 hours after a meal, so that's what I'm going to do. I'll probably have him on wet food or a hamburger/rice diet for a couple weeks while he's healing as well.

He has so much love and attention and just this week got a beautiful bath in the Lake Huron from Nathan. It was so hard waiting at the vet to see whether he made it or not. Nathan and I have taken other animals there that we've found ~ usually hit by cars ~ and Dr. Barton Meadows always does his best to save their lives. Nathan ~ I'm so happy Fang pulled through this and if he gets through the night with no problems maybe you can take him home tomorrow. you and Fang.
God we've been through a lot together, haven't we? This woman should recieve a stipend for all the hours she's spent in the hospital for my family. My animals completely adore you. Even Gildie loves you and she hates everyone. I swear, if there is an injured animal to be found, they're gonna find us.

My brother, the shepherd. Oh Eens! I wish I could've called you myself, but I was stuck at the vet's and my signal was horrible up there. And then my phone died. I was worried how you'd react, but I just knew you had to know. Plus, when I'm in a crisis my first instinct is to reach everyone I know that could possibly help. In a way, I'm glad you didn't have to see him like that. It was freakishly violent and fast how much his condition changed. I've never seen anything like it. I'm starting to be able to tell with a dog when it's something life threatening and not just a passing sick feeling. That's one of the only things that makes me feel okay about our other dogs passing. I'm learning. I honestly think if I had waited to get into Dr. Mark at North River Animal Hospital, Fang wouldn't be with us right now. I don't think he would've made it that long, and if he had, I don't think that doctor knows what he's doing half the time. Thank you for your kind words about my relationship with animals. That's super sweet.

Just before we got the call that he would be ok, Tracy kept hearing him roo in her head. Then, after I hung up, she played me this goofy little ringtone on her phone that captures his personality perfectly. She's so sweet to comfort me and can warm my heart in the most dire situations. This is for my Mom, if she's reading: He's my iddo biddy basset friend, and I'm going to love him, and hold him, and squeeze him, and pet him, be his friend forever and ever, until the end of time... and then some more! I just kept thinking how grateful I was to have that video camera and that footage, ya know? Tracy is wonderfully patient and kind. It couldn't have been easy to put up with us in the past couple years with how completely wrecked we've been, but she definitely is a trouper in spite of that. Tracy gets a gold star, doesn't she? And mom has been checking in on this thread now and then, so I'll let her know the updates.

lazycrockett said: You spent $1500 to try and save an animal???
Actually, I'm not sure how much it's going to cost. They warned me that it's commonly that much for this type of procedure and had me sign an agreement to pay if it indeed became that much. When I took a cat into this guy last year, he did about $1500 worth of corrective surgery on his shattered arm and the cat had a million other problems as well. Because he has such a huge heart and truly appreciates people who will go out of their way to help a stray or injured animal, he only charged me $350. He might cut me a deal again. But if he doesn't, that's fine too. Our very first dog Breezy was hit by a car on the highway and shattered her pelvis. We took her to Michigan State University which is just about the best veterinary hospital in the country. They did hip replacement surgery on her and it cost $2500 if I remember correctly. The funny part about this story is that my grandmother gave my father a bunch of grief about spending that much because she's "just an animal". Everyone in my family gets along great, but I think it's the one time I remember my dad telling my grandma to fuck off. I understand that many people don't have the same kind of emotional and sometimes financial investment in their pets as I do. I was raised to feel the way I do about all creatures and I think I just gravitate towards animals anyway. Having pets can be an expensive and trying experience, just like children. But I don't adopt these animals and do my best to give them a good life, just to give up when a difficult patch comes along. I don't know if you were passing judgement for my decision to help my dog, but that's how it appears in the way you worded your question. I'm not going to take offense to it, but I'd just ask you to not judge me or others for this, the same way I'm not judging you right now. Thank you.
