Has anyone else seen this film?

I LOVED it!!! I would have never seen it but I read that it was endorsed by the Special Olympics. This movie explains way better than I can, how people with disabilties are not always what they seem. I found myself nodding and laughing at each scene!

Finally a movie that shows the reality of dealing with people with special needs. For those who are worried about being offended I can tell you that you will not be, I wasn't angry at any thing in this film...and in the end the only people you laugh at is the "normal" characters and how skewed their view of the world really is.

If you want to laugh your ass off and broaden social consciousness at the same time I suggest, strike that, DEMAND that you invest the 2 hours of your life and watch this movie.

Go add it to your netfilx queque right now!!!

woot!

I started this thread because I just saw/ cleaned up what went on today... i think it's horrible that people here are so closeminded to laugh at those who are different than them. sad

I wanted to say something positive about this topic, as a mod, but more so as a special educator who has been so deeply effected/affected by my work. This movie and the feeling you will get after watching is a major positive. nod

It makes me sad that not everyone sees the beauty I see in those different than what is considered ideal or normal. To be honest it even shocks me a little this being a Prince fan site.... if the man has taught us anything it's that living inside the "box" is only allowing yourself to see part of the big picture, and beauty is relative. I thought at least his fans would get that. confused

There are parts of this movie I didnt care for. People tend to think just because a person has a disability they are dumb and useless. From personal experience, its the opposite.
Say it's just a dream...
U open up ur eyes and come 2 realize
u simply imagined this
So u lean over and give her a kiss
Here on earth, here on earth,
with u it's not so bad
Here on earth, here on earth
eye don't feel so sad
Stay right here

Really? Honestly not one second of it bothered me! And I am ultra sensitive when it comes to this stuff!

I'm a mother bear when it comes to anyone messing with my kids. mad

I don't even like the term "disability", because to me the disadvatage is not with in those who are different, but with in the world at large.

I think this film shows how things really are, and I think if people knew that they wouldn't make offensive jokes or be scared of those with special needs.

I don't get Knoxville's humor, like I said the only reason I watched the movie was because the Special Olympics were pimping it so much, he's not over the top "jackass" in this he was really good. You should watch it. nod

My Thread was in responce to a word used heavily for the past 3 days, and any term can be found offensive if one so despratly needs to be offended.

I think I get what you are trying to say....but "retard" IS an offesive word. It's along the same lines as a racial slur.

It sure is and I am glad that I wasn't around this weekend to witness whatever nonsense went on regarding its use.

Mickg, I don't really expect anything more from you. You go out of your way to offend people and try to pass it off as people having something against you. My 16 year old son is autistic. He is mentally retarded. See how hilarity ensues? neutral

Sweeny, I saw the movie. While I thought the treatment of people with special needs in the movie was very cool, the movie just was not funny to me. It was pretty boring because it felt like it had been done before.

It was like that episode of South Park where Cartman tried to rig the Special Olympics.

I disagree that it is anywhere near a "racial slur" being that retarded isn't a race at all. Retarded is a scientific term, a Apple can be retarded, a Cat can be retarded, and humans through all genders and races are retarded. In a scientific nature of discussion the retard is perfectly execptable. Everyone is retarded in some way. My spelling is retarded from the norm.

"Retarded" is okay, "retard" is kind of offensive.

Like "homosexual" vs "homo."

There are ways to use any term, though, I think. I remembered Something About Mary where Matt Dillon is trying to impress Cameron Diaz by saying he "works with retards." That seems okay to me because it makes him look like an idiot, it's not making fun of retarded people.

Feel free to call me a homo, I am not a homosexual but I am a homosapien. Homo is a non-english word that translates to Human, well roughly.
