This should be the ONLY thing being discussed in the Org right now. Batwoman a LESBIAN. Having exciting hand-to-hand combat with Catwoman in mud, Jello, or some other water-based product (BAM). Meeting up with Wonder Woman on her invisible jet for superwomen "conferences" (POW). And just what kinds of things will she have on her utility belt (SPLAT)?

This is the best thing to happen to comic books. Ever. Maybe the best thing to ever happen in the history of literature. Ever.

BATWOMAN RETURNS AS...BETTE PORTER?
DC Comics announced this week that the character of Batwoman will be making a comeback starting in #11 of the new comic series 52--as a lesbian. Or more specifically, as "a wealthy (socialite), buxom lipstick lesbian" who has a romantic history with ex-police detective with Renee Montoya, and is currently dating a doctor. The "lesbian socialite by night, crime fighter by later in the night" will share the same name as the original Batwoman, Kathy Kane, but go by "Kate".

"We decided to give her a different point of view," explained Dan DiDio, vice president and executive editor at DC. "We wanted to make her a more unique personality than others in the Bat-family. That's one of the reasons we went in this direction....If the character is gay, she might have had different levels of challenges in her life. The fact that she conceals her own sexuality to some of the people around her and to her own family is going to be a bit of a story, so there are going to be secrets within secrets."

DC Comics has apparently been flooded with the same number of emails I have since this was announced, because DiDio told the press, "we had a feeling it would attract some attention, but we're a little surprised it did this much." He clearly underestimated how starved lesbians are for any decent representation these days.

OK, Batwoman may be a Lesbian, but obviously the person who designed her new costume is straight. How 1975 is this???

DC Comics is amazing, they'll do anything in order to sell, including giving one of the lamest characters in their company her own series. Oh yeah, let's make her lesbian, maybe the preteen pubescent boys will buy it.


I'm just saying, if they want to make a social statement and shit like that, do it with a decent character, not some cast off.

But they did drop the ball, eventually.


I'd heard something along this line. I think they also played around with the notion of Colossus being gay or bi in some alternate storylines.
