Happy June! It's National Candy Month!

Hello friends!

It's June - National Candy Month, the most delicious month of the year! biggrin

Let us all celebrate marvelous, wonderful candy, and the joy it brings! (It can also bring tooth decay, obesity and diabetes but let's forget those pesky issues for now for the sake of this happy thread. Kay? biggrin)

What is your favorite kind of candy? What was your favorite candy as a child?

Do you give boxes of candy to your sweethearts? Have you ever received candy as a gesture of love or while being courted?

Remember the renassaince of "gourmet" jelly beans in the 1980s, specifically Jelly Belly jelly beans, and the multitude of wonderous flavors in which the beans came?

Candy is not just for eating, as you may know!

Beautiful works of art have been created using candy of all types, especially chocolate! One such artist/chocolatier of reknown is Mr. Joseph Schmidt (http://www.josephschmidtconfections.com), who opened his confectionary shop in San Fransisco in the 1980s and created what has come to be known in the industry as the 'American' Truffle.

Beyond that distinction, Mr. Schmidt is also credited with creating most amazing and beautiful sculptures from chocolate:

From his website: "Joseph's work is highly regarded and has been displayed by such institutions as the American Crafts Museum in New York.

Special commissions have included the Eiffel Tower for the French Ambassador; a 25 pound cable car for the Queen of England; a white dove for Nelson Mandela; a giant panda for Prince Philip and the World Wildlife Organization; a chocolate California state bear for a banquet hosted by then-Governor Pete Wilson; an anniversary present for then-President Reagan commissioned by Nancy Reagan; and a gift for Mikhail Gorbachev.

When then-Mayor Dianne Feinstein of San Francisco went to China some years ago, she took a few hundred tiny white and dark chocolate pandas that Joseph made especially for the occasion.

His largest creation to date was in 1992 when he designed a Christmas exhibit entitled the "Chocolate Celebration," filling 14,000 feet in the lobby of One Market Plaza, San Francisco. The project consisted of 14 different themes using 10,000 lbs. of chocolate. Included in the exhibit was a full-sized chocolate table with a Christmas feast, a skillfully decorated 3-1/2 foot chocolate tree, a Victorian side table complete with top hat, gloves, and cane (all in chocolate), a Dresden toy chest overflowing with toy sculptures, an alpine village and a 12 foot high pear tree. Joseph completed the massive display in less than three months.

His costliest work was a $12,000 Easter extravaganza of 2,000 eggs, dozens of tulips and crocuses all sculpted for a San Francisco landscape garden show.

As contributor and supporter of the fine arts in San Francisco, Joseph created an exhibition for "The Joys of Chocolate" presented in the lobby of the Transamerica Pyramid."

And let us not forget that a modest amount of dark chocolate each day is good for one's heart, as well as one's soul. smile

Happy happy June, dear people of Prince.org! Have a wonderfully sweet month!

Ahh. Marathon Bar and Chewels gum! biggrin (though chewing gum is really gross, chewing gum I hate the most! wink)

Smarties are delicious, yes.

My favorite candy has always been chocolates of all kinds, though I do also very much enjoy gumdrops, lemondrops, cotton candy, and caramels.

As a child I loved candy cigarettes, Pixie Stix, and a wide assortment of penny candies. biggrin

Mm, candy.

I like good dark chocolate better than just about anything. If some almonds or hazelnuts wanna jump in there, that's cool too. nod I love After 8 mints. And certain jelly beans, especially black ones and white (coconut, not the weird spearminty) ones. Most red ones are good too. nod Most red candy, in general, is good. And I love Pez.

As a kid my favorite thing was a Snickers bar. I liked Laffy Taffy (still do), pixie sticks, red licorice (Red Vines rule) . . . Tootsie Rolls and Pops . . . saltwater taffy. . .and those terrible goo-in-a-tube "candies" that appeared sometime in the 80s.

You know, I don't really eat much candy. That's a shame. I love candy. hmmm
oh noes, prince is gonna soo me!!1!
