"Legends Weekend was an event created and hosted by Winfrey to help celebrate the achievement of women of African American heritage. She was inspired to create the event after receiving a present for her 50th birthday from the actress Cicely Tyson. Winfrey had been touched by the gift, but embarrassed because she had not invited her to her birthday party. To make up for it, Winfrey decided to invite the actress to lunch. After much thinking, she also wanted to invite other guests. She then decided that the event should be on a grand scale and that she should invite other African American women who had been an inspiration to her. The first event of the weekend was a luncheon held at Winfrey's personal estate, the next night, a formal ball (which was protested by the American Front supremacist group) was hosted by Winfrey, and the third event was a gospel brunch with live music. Guests who attended were put into categories of "legends" and "younguns". The 25 legends invited included Tina Turner, Diana Ross, Dionne Warwick, Patti LaBelle, Cicely Tyson, Diahann Carroll, Ruby Dee, Roberta Flack, Della Reese, Rosa Parks, and Maya Angelou. Some of the 45 younguns invited were Ashanti, Tyra Banks, Janet Jackson, Mariah Carey, Brandy (entertainer) and Natalie Cole. Each attendee was given a pair of diamond earrings, reportedly worth $200,000.[10]" I mean, like, where is the sun?

Why the fuck did they feel SO threatened by Oprah saying "thank you" to Black women who've inspired her? I'd love to hear their argument, I should look that shit up

I would have loved to have seen Vanessa Williams there. The first Black Miss America, 1984...and/or her successor Suzette Charles.

Chaka Khan a young 'un? It all looks very opulent. You know you have money when you can call your house something horribly ostentatious like 'Promised Land'. I need a job. It sounds over the top, sure...but for a lil black girl born in a wodden shack in pre-Civil Rights Mississippi, the fact that she could move that far in her life and be able to positively affect change for others and a global level, I can totally understand why she would name the Montecito house 'Promised Land'...

I took a look at her website.
My goodness so many beautiful, distinguished women there. And, to be in the company of Maya Anjelou would be a dream come true. ^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^

Certainly, whatever anyone thinks of Oprah, you have to admire her drive and determination to succeed. She's done ok.

I admire her for doing this, but the parting gifts struck me as a bit inappropriate.
I'm just not moved watching Oprah give Tina Turner, Mary J. Blige, and Halle Berry large diamond jewelry rather than donate $1/2 million to each of their favorite charities. My Legacy
