58 : 5+8=13 : 58-13=45
look at the symbol page, you'll see that 9,18,27,36,45 etc are all the same symbols.
If you do the above math with any two-digit number, you'll always end up with a multiple of 9.
Except if you would think of 8 as 08.

Yup it's always a multiple of 9.

Time for a little algebra: You've got any 2 digit number... so if x is in the 10s position, and y is in the units position, the number is 10x + y.

So then you do: 10x + y - (x + y) = 9x

I included this in a Free College Day session I gave at my college last year. People really loved it!
