PLAYOFF SERIES: Eastern Conference finals; Heat lead 3-2.

Just when their renowned defensive prowess was starting to come into question, the Detroit Pistons showed they still have it. But that was in Detroit.

Now they may need to display the same type of defense in Miami if they are to send the Eastern Conference finals to a Game 7 for the second straight year and spoil the Heat's best shot at reaching the NBA Finals for the first time.

Detroit lost by double digits in Games 3 and 4, the only ones in this series to be played at Miami. Those wins gave the Heat a 3-1 lead, leaving them three chances to end the Pistons' reign as conference champions.

Miami could not take advantage of the first, losing 91-78 at The Palace of Auburn Hills on Wednesday. The Heat had scored at least 88 points in every other game of the series.

"They took their defense up to another level," said Miami coach Pat Riley, whose team was held scoreless over the final 3 1/2 minutes. "It was very intense."

19 point Miami lead, 51 seconds to go in the third. Not looking good for the Pistons, but then their catalyst Billups is having an awful night, as are several other big players for Detroit.

Who'da thunk it?

Quite a surprising end to their season.
But then it not too much of a surprise.
Miami is that good.

Congratulations to The Miami Heat. woot!

Indeed, though he was far from swaggering tonight. He played terribly, as did several others Detroit needed to step up. I'm really surprised as despite Miami being up 3-2 I thought the Pistons would grind this one out and then be too much for Miami back at the palace. Hamilton played well late on, but it was too late. Shaq played very well and Wade put in an amazing effort considering he was hospitalized with flu not long before the game. It all just goes to show the beauty and agony that is the whole NBA season structure. You play a long, hard regular season of 82 games to get to the playoffs and be seeded highly, but none of that means a thing once you get to the sharp end of the playoffs. With the Spurs a shadow of their former selves this time, I really thought the Pistons would win it without too much trouble. I don't know who I want to win now. I hope Dallas get there though, and that Nowitski can play like he did the other night. Incredible. bow

Love this game! cool

PLAYOFF SERIES: Western Conference finals; Mavericks lead 3-2.

For Dirk Nowitzki, delivering a good follow-up act to the highest-scoring playoff game in team history can't be easy.

Leading the Dallas Mavericks to the most meaningful win in their 26-year history would be one way to do it.

Two nights after Nowitzki bounced back in stellar fashion, the Phoenix Suns again must show why they have been this postseason's most resilient team as they return home looking to spoil the first of Dallas' two chances to reach its first NBA Finals.

Don't you think that The Heat's dee'fence needs a little work hmmm They always seem a spent force after the third quarter.

I'm not convinced the reserve stock on Dallas' bench either. I mean, they're missing a specialist three point shooter.

Oh mate, right from the tip-off you could see the coach's zonal tactics were all wrong. In the second period the switch to free break offence back fired and the visitors were all over their asses disbelief

In my humble opinion, based purely on the current form of personnel, stats and the locker room injury list, they HAVE to go with the old 1-3-1 zone pressure plays. It's the only way!
