Last few games I've watched on ESPN here haven't been shown from the start. We get this same programme about street ballers and then it cuts in midway through the first quarter. The game is in the 4th quarter now with only 2 minutes left. Pistons 81, Cavs 79. Damn. Why don't they show the games I want to see? I'm guessing they'll show the Spurs Mavs game instead. Wow, close one. Wonder if the Pistons can hang on.

PLAYOFF SERIES: Western Conference semifinals; Mavericks lead 3-2.
The San Antonio Spurs barely were able to keep their season alive playing at home. Now they have to do it in Dallas. Both games there in this series went down to the wire, and the Mavericks won both to move within one victory of knocking off the Spurs. They'll get a second chance to end the reign of the defending NBA champions and avoid heading back to San Antonio as the teams square off in Game 6 of this semifinal series.

Well, no Terry for Dallas, but I think they still have enough potentially to win it. I haven't seen the Spurs as much this season, but they seem a little out of sync. They seemed like a better team before Finley was brought in and started sharing time with Ginobli. Depends on Parker and Duncan, I guess. If those two play well the Spurs will win. Despite a shaky start in the game, I'm going to go for a narrow Spurs win.

Through 82 regular-season games, whenever the Detroit Pistons faced boredom and fatigue from another long flight, another back-to-back, or another game against a lottery-bound team, they fought through it with days like today in mind. Today the Pistons will play a deciding Game 7 on their home floor. It's not the one they really want at home -- that would come next month in the NBA Finals -- but it's a game they need to win to get there. The Cleveland Cavaliers come to the Palace at 3:30 p.m. to end what has turned into a highly competitive and entertaining series that's tied after the Pistons rebounded from a Game 5 loss Wednesday to win Friday night's Game 6 in Cleveland. And the strange part is, if they win today, they will look at the Game 5 loss as a blessing. It issued a needed reminder that they're not unflappable just because they're playing in a Michigan zip code. "I think that's good," Pistons coach Flip Saunders said. "We got beat in Game 5, we won Game 6, and we're going to come back in Game 7 and we're not going to be thinking, 'Well, we're going to win because we're at home.' I think that having a little bit of that anxiety, knowing that if you don't play, you can get beat, that's always good." The Cavaliers stunned the Pistons on Wednesday night. But down, 3-2, and facing elimination much earlier than expected, the Pistons responded Friday. Momentum started to swing back in Detroit's direction in the second half, when the Pistons made the right plays in the key moments while LeBron James committed four turnovers. One week ago, the Pistons were expected to sweep the Cavaliers. Two days ago, their entire season seemed doomed. Now thanks to Friday night, the Pistons are where they've wanted to be all season: Playing Game 7 at the Palace. "There's no question that the adversity we've had to go through these last five games has been something that you can go out and you can learn from," Saunders said. "Six days ago, I told the guys, we had a lot of people patting you on your back. The same people six days later were getting the shovels out with the dirt. Things can change pretty quick, both ways." The Pistons have played in Game 7s before. They lost in the NBA Finals last year in Game 7, but they won Game 7s in the Eastern Conference finals last season and in the second round two seasons ago. The Cavaliers haven't played in an elimination game since 1998 and haven't played in a Game 7 since LeBron James was 7 years old. Maybe that's why the Pistons don't buy the theory that the Cavaliers don't have anything at stake today. "They have a lot to lose," Saunders said. "They put themselves in a situation two games ago of winning a series. So anytime you're that close to winning a series, you have something to lose. We both have something to lose at this point." The Pistons say they aren't resting on home court, and that they expect today's game to be close once again. For one thing, the Cavaliers have James, the kind of player who can take over a game in the fourth quarter. "If we can stay focused, get through that first quarter, stick it out, grind it out, fight and get to that fourth quarter," Cleveland guard Eric Snow told reporters in Cleveland, "we have a guy who can win the game for us." But the Pistons will take that challenge. They wanted Game 7s at home all along, but they never said winning them would be easy. "Do I like that we're in it?" guard Chauncey Billups asked. "Do I like that we do what we do? No, I don't. But do I have the ultimate confidence that when we do get into these little holes that we're going to scratch and pull and jump our way out of there? Of course." Contact KRISTA LATHAM at 313-223-4493 or klatham@freepress.com.
