PLAYOFF SERIES: NBA finals; tied 2-2.

On Tuesday, the Dallas Mavericks found themselves less than seven minutes away from taking a 3-0 lead over the Miami Heat in the NBA finals.

Five days later, they'll be trying to avoid being pushed to within one defeat of losing the series and they won't have their top reserve available to help them.

Dallas will be without Jerry Stackhouse for the crucial Game 5 when it meets the Heat in Miami with the series tied at two games apiece.

The Heat were outplayed in the first two games in Dallas, losing both contests by a combined 24 points, and were on the verge of going down 3-0 when they trailed the Mavs 89-76 with just under seven minutes to go in the fourth quarter of Game 3 on Tuesday.

But behind Dwayne Wade, the Heat mounted the second-largest fourth-quarter rally in NBA finals history, outscoring the Mavs 22-7 over the final 6:34 to come away with a 98-96 win.

Wade tied a career playoff high with 42 points Tuesday and had another solid performance in Game 4 on Thursday, scoring 36 as Miami routed Dallas 98-74 to even the finals.

"It's a series now," said Wade, who shook off a knee injury suffered in Game 3 to shoot 13-for-23 from the field Thursday. "It's 2-2 and the way we knew it was going to be. It's best-of-three."

It's embarrassing and fairly obvious. What a joke.
It did NOT help that Dallas missed 4 freethrows with the game on the line.

There's the story right there. Ya can't blame the refs because they blow calls - ALWAYS. My coach used to say "If you let the refs determine the outcome of your game then you didn't deserve to win in the first place" and he's right. Make sure you take the game OUT of the refs' hands and leave no doubt. Mavs choked another game away, plain and simple.

I agree with your coach and your comments. I can't argue with that.

Wade's hands are almost on the MVP trophy after the last few games in which he's had the edge over Nowitzki. This series is poised beautifully. I just hope it goes to seven.

Miami has NOT won a game in Dallas in 4 years. No way Miami wins UNLESS the refs pull a tank job.

Odds are you're right. Dallas is a very resilient team that now has some motivation to really come out strong and take this to 7.

But some time ago, a team coached by Riles that had never clinched a title on their nemesis' home floor did it. And it was the greatest single win in that franchise's history. But that's ancient history.

Dallas wins by 7 tonite.

PLAYOFF SERIES: NBA finals; Heat lead 3-2.

The way the first two games of the NBA finals went, many thought the series might not even get back to Dallas. Dwyane Wade made sure it did.

Now it's time for Dirk Nowitzki and the Mavericks to respond, playing what they hope is just the first of two straight games in which they will try to deny Wade and the Heat their first NBA championship.

"We can smell it," Wade said. "Dallas plays well at home but we are a confident bunch so we'll see what happens."

Following three straight wins in Miami as Wade averaged 40.3 points, the Heat head back to Dallas with a 3-2 series lead. Games 1 and 2 in Dallas saw the Mavericks hold Wade to an average of 26.5 points as they won both contests by double digits.

"He's the best right now, that's all you can say," Shaquille O'Neal said. "He's the best."

Wade took over Game 5 when it mattered most, scoring 17 of his 43 points in the fourth quarter and hitting the decisive free throws with 1.9 seconds left in overtime to give the Heat a 101-100 victory on Sunday.
