People who don't know their own telephone number

I overheard this in a store the other day:

CASHIER (entering data in the computer system): ...And your contact number?

CUSTOMER: Oh...uh...(416) 6...3...no, 62!...62...9...uh...uh...I don't know redface; I never call myself [embarassed laugh]!

And this is not the first time I've heard the "I-don't-know-I-don't-call-myself" thing.

Have you ever heard this? Or are you one of those people who doesn't know your own phone number? If so, how can this be? confuse

maybe they just object to the invasion of privacy inherent in being asked to provide personal info for purposes of a transaction confused

I'm really really really bad with phone numbers, and I can barely remember my parent's house numbers that they've had since the 1980s.

No. These are people who legitimately don't know their own telephone number.

And this was no invasion of privacy - they needed the number in the event that they would have to contact him regarding last-minute cancellation of an appointment with the tailor.

I've been unlucky enough to switch cellphone #'s three times in as many years, so yeah, I have trouble reciting my current one off the top of my head.

I used to mix it up by accident and someone will end up with a combination of my old and new ones. Now if someone asks for my number I just check it on my phone. I get some weird looks, but whatever.

okay. thansk for the clarification. i've been asked to provide my full name. address and phone number when i've shopped for anything from batteries at radio shack to groceries at the store.

when i refuse to provide this information many of the store clerks will "allow" me to go undocumented when i point out that it's either that, or i walk smile

My dad doesn't know our phone number... which we've had for at LEAST 22 years (I suspect it might be more - like 30 years). He forgot it when he got a cell phone because it was stored in there and he would never have to manually dial it. His phone now has voice recognition so he just picks it up and says "uchi" (Japanese for "house") really slowly until it automatically dials. giggle
I mean, like, where is the sun?

It took me years to learn it. Why should one need to learn it especially? I can take out the phone from my pocket and check it out if needed. There are far too many numeric ID codes and passwords for people to remember these days, anyway. I'm surprised I've managed to memorize even as many as I have.

I hear this all the time. It is such a weird excuse lol I'm sure if some hottie walked up asking for the number, the number would suddenly be tattooed on their eyeballs lol
