THAT'S funny! I know, but it's for my discount. I'm trying my best not to charge anything else on my Target Visa and I don't get my discount by using any other form of payment. |

Target discount: I closed my naughty Target account this year. A Target card was not safe in my wallet. Destruction was the only option. http://elmadartista.tumblr.com/ http://twitter.com/madartista

I've been doing the same... was trying to use up a box of checks that had an outdated address printed on them. Now that they're all gone, I suppose I should go back to paying my bills online, but I've been too lazy to update all the information stored in my bank's online bill payment system. There are some landlords who accept credit cards... I wish I could put my rent on my Northwest Airlines Visa card, as I'd get a ton of frequent flyer miles that way. About people who wait before cashing checks... I sent checks to my brothers as holiday gifts, and both of them waited so long that I had to tell them about checks going "stale" after six months under the Uniform Commercial Code. (A bank can choose whether to pay a stale check, and mine says they won't.) I don't get it... they're both students... when I was one (and always low on cash), I'd cash any check I received ASAP. Well, because of this thread, I was going to return to the 21st century and pay the water/sewer bill through my bank's online bill payment system... but it's not working right now. So... back to the checkbook and stamps. Please note: effective March 21, 2010, I've stepped down from my prince.org Moderator position. |

I always use checks. Don't have a debit card, never had one, don't really want one. I'm sure it's convenient. But the money goes fast enough with checks even though it takes a while to write them. I don't need it flowing any faster with a card.

Yes, I was a bit surprised. At every other apartment I've had, the rent included water (hot and cold) and sewer. Here we have to pay for it, as well as a $4.00 monthly service fee to the private company that handles the "submetering" and billing. However... the former resident manager made a mistake in preparing my lease, and thanks to some basic rules of contract interpretation, he accidently made the landlord responsible for my cold water. A few months later, when I realized what was going on, I sent a polite lawyer letter to the landlord explaining their screw-up, with a few citations to Washington state case law. The result? They credited my account for all the money I'd previously paid for cold water, and until my current lease runs out, I'm no longer getting billed for cold water. Well, that's the hazard of leasing to lawyers, I suppose. Yeah, at my cheapo apartment, my utility bills amount to about $8 per month. It's awesome. oh noes, prince is gonna soo me!!1!

Actually, I thought the tone of my letter was quite amicable. I stressed that: 1) I've been very happy living there; and 2) when my current lease runs out, I won't have a problem with accepting responsibility for the cold water bill. The only reason I typed the magic words "Attorney at Law" beneath my name was to indicate that I knew what I was talking about. My take on it is this: the lease that I signed is "the deal." There is no other. If I misunderstood something in the lease, didn't read something, etc., their response would probably be, "Too bad. You signed a lease, and you're bound by its terms." Well, guess what? It works both ways. Well, that's the hazard of leasing to lawyers, I suppose.
Funny you should mention that... I don't know about lawyers, but there are landlords who won't rent to law students. Other students (or at least, other graduate students) are okay... just no law students. Maybe they're worried about overeager first-year students who just finished studying landlord-tenant law in their Property class. Oh, BTW, when I was signing the lease paperwork, the resident manager said that most of the tenants are lawyers, doctors, and Microsoft employees. He (incorrectly) guessed that I was in the third category. Please note: effective March 21, 2010, I've stepped down from my prince.org Moderator position. |

I know I'm not alone Back in the 1970s, when money was pretty tight for my parents, my dad spent some time figuring out exactly when the supermarket took checks to their bank for deposit and how long it took for a check to reach my parents' bank. (The check-clearing system was somewhat slower back then.) He must have done a pretty good job, because AFAIK none of those checks ever bounced.
