Yeah, I'm such an awful person because I don't like seeing people self-mutilate for the sake of fashion, religion or any other crack-pot trend that comes along.

Yeah, I'm such an awful person because I don't like seeing people self-mutilate for the sake of fashion, religion or any other crack-pot trend that comes along. i was referring more to the intolerance for the ideas and beliefs of others, which is a trend of yours not just on this thread but on many others as well. you would fit in well in both the bush administration and al-quaeda, but let's not get this moved to the P&R forum.

Well, as I'm an atheist homosexual, I doubt I'd sit comfortably at either the Bush or Bin Laden tables, at dinner. The only thing I'm "intolerant" of is stupidity - and that includes self-mutilation of any way, shape or form.

No tats here.
It seems that every girl/women these days between 16 and 25 has a tatoo on their lower back. At least here in Australia. Mostly they look ridiculous to me and will look even more ridiculous when they are older. Each to their own i supppose. When I read about the evils of drinking, I gave up reading.

Well I guess I'll be a big ol' rebel on this thread.
I've got three, with plans for many more. I love body art -but I agree with those that said tattoos can be tacky. They can be really fucking tacky. So many people get a tattoo because it's trendy now. They put no thought or consideration into the design, instead choosing some meaningless flash off the wall because all their friends or their fave singer have it. (note: not all who choose flash are bandwagonners, but damn too many are) They don't take the effort to get a good artist to do their work and so end up with cheap pieces that look like hell after 6 months, and they make no consideration for placement on the body or even if it fits with their personal style, aesthetically speaking. THAT, my friends, is tacky. And most people that do that DO end up regretting the tattoo. I don't feel sorry for them though. They thoughtlessy leapt onto a trend in 04 and don't like it now because something else is cool? They'll just have to deal with it. My own tattos are all significant to me. My first I got on my 18th birthday, to symbolize my transition into adulthood. And the 2nd and 3rd are memorial tattoos -one for my father and one for my dogs. I'm not jumping on any trend by getting my ink done, though I don't blame people for thinking so when they see me. My father, several aunts and uncles and family friends all had tattoos for as long as I could remember. One of my first memories is being held by my dad and examining the beautiful patterns on his arms. Tattoos have always been normal for me because all the adults in my life exept my mom had ink of some kind. I'd made up my mind before I was 5 that when I grew up I'd decorate myself the same way. It wasn't until I entered school that I even knew it was considered abnormal -especially in 1990 -to be heavily tattooed. "A Watcher scoffs at gravity!"

I think ppl get tatoos for different reasons- some girls I have known just got them because they thought they were cool but most of my friends who have them got them for reasons other then a trend. They mean something to them- they tell a story or describe something special in their lives. Some ppl do it as a tribute to someone or something. It is just another way for ppl to express themselves- self expression is important..

He likes to act like he's all grown up
He wanted to grow up to be an actor But he never told anybody He likes to spill all of his guts On the top of a well stocked bar And then swallow them bit by bit remembering every scar It's a valid reason for stronger drinks And a new tattoo is a new reason to think

Justin1972UK said: You know... Walk around with a frozen turkey on your head if it makes you feel better but don't be surprised if people comment on your "self-expression."
And to all the people whom have tattooes for personal/spiritual/metaphysical reasons... BULL! I don't know one person with a tattoo whom hasn't wanted to flash their chest; arse; arms; legs; spine; pubis; lower back; neck and legs in public without any encoragement whatsoever - just so you can gaze upon their lovely "body art".Tattooes are ugly - get them lasered off and get over it. I have had mine for nearly 10 years and no one in my immediate family and very few of my friends in New York have ever seen them; let alone know that I have them. And I disagree that tattoos are a form self-mutilation. According to Merriam-Webster mutilation is defined as: 1 : to cut up or alter radically so as to make imperfect 2 : to cut off or permanently destroy a limb or essential part of Tattoos don't make one's body imperfect any more than the scars from falling down when you're a kid do, and they aren't a form of destruction either. Now, I will admit that some tattoos can have more sinister connotations (I'm specifically thinking of the tattoo numbers that the Nazis gave concentration camp inmates) but for the most part, tattoos are chosen, not forced. Same here. How can anyone possible put something on their body that they would still like say.....30 years later? That's scary. I do like looking at them though.

You get the right tattoo you'll love it forever, even when you're old and gravity's kicked in and the ink has faded. It becomes a part of you. If my tattoos somehow came off, I'd feel incomplete. Like I'd lost a limb or something. The same thing goes for a partner -find the right person and you'll never regret it, no matter what happens. But find the wrong person or the wrong ink? You're screwed. [Edited 4/21/06 1:40am] "A Watcher scoffs at gravity!"
