I dont have any tattoos but i have thought about getting one loads of times, but i keep thinking, what happens if i dont like what ive tattooed on my arse etc in 5 years time? So ive always chickened out of it!

It's odd that when people like Jocelyn Wildenstein or Michael Jackson disfigure themselves with cosmetic surgery, most sane people are in agreement that it's a very bad thing... But when somebody has something resembling Cher's knickers drawn on their back, it's somehow "cool". Neither of mine took 6 hours and they sure as hell weren't painful to get. It fact, one tickled so much the guy had to keep telling me to quit laughing b/c it was making me move too much. And frankly, I doubt most people are hoping to impress someone in particular when they get tattooed, it seems that a lot of people get tattoos for themselves, not for what others think about them... The check. The string he dropped. The Mona Lisa. The musical notes taken out of a hat. The glass. The toy shotgun painting. The things he found. Therefore, everything seen–every object, that is, plus the process of looking at it–is a Duchamp.

When I've thought about getting one I was to be on my lower back where I have a scar from childhood. I abandoned the idea then years later everyone was getting lower back tats, I was SO glad I hadn't done it

Then why would peoples opinions of tattoos bother you so much? There are a lot of contradictions in that post and it clearly seems you care way too much about what peole think. You say that people are entitled to their own opinions....unless of course they disagree with yours. If it were truly for your own benefit it wouldn't matter at all what others thought. [Edited 4/16/06 18:07pm] other peoples opinions of tattoos DON'T bother me...its people that call others tacky and stupid for something that is none of their business. i DO believe everyone is entitled to their own opinion however it may be less 'tacky' if they were respectful to others and kept thier negativitiy to themselves. i don't go around calling people idiots or stupid because i don't like their haircut or piercings or clothing so i don't appreciate being shit on or disrespected because i have tattoos. everyone in the world can disagree with me...its ok...i won't degrade them for it. i'm only human...i have feelings...i don't expect acceptance for my love of tattoos...hell my family hates them...but i do expect tolerance and respect. not for the tattoos necessarily but for the person i am. wow...can i ramble. you're only as old as you feel..............so how old do i feel

You know... Walk around with a frozen turkey on your head if it makes you feel better but don't be surprised if people comment on your "self-expression."
And to all the people whom have tattooes for personal/spiritual/metaphysical reasons... BULL! I don't know one person with a tattoo whom hasn't wanted to flash their chest; arse; arms; legs; spine; pubis; lower back; neck and legs in public without any encoragement whatsoever - just so you can gaze upon their lovely "body art". Tattooes are ugly - get them lasered off and get over it.

Tattooes are ugly - get them lasered off and get over it. there are people who keep their tattoos and piercings quiet and then there are those who flash everything everywhere. obviously the people who keep their stuff to themselves you're not going to notice as much. I had a friend who had 17 tattoos on her back and i had known her for at least a year before i even saw a glimpse of any of them. she didn't like to show them off because they were somewhat personal to her but sometimes you could see a little bit here and there if she was wearing a tank top. I've had my belly button pierced for about 7 years now and only 4 or 5 people have ever seen it or know about it. i just did it because i think that it's beautiful, not because i wear belly shirts. so it is possible to have a tattoo that's just for you. and yes, some are ugly but some are beautiful. much like personalities.
