Purposely tanning or using fake-n-bake is stupid anyhow. Not to mention bad for you if it's a real tan. What's wrong with being your own colour? Most people who try to alter their skin tone just end up looking silly, not attractive. As a matter of fact, despite my spending loads of time outside in the warmer months, I am going to do everything in my power not to tan too much this year at all. SPF 70, here I come!
SammiJ has a great point. It's amazing to me that we live in a world where the dark think they're unattractive, and so try to cosmetically or chemically lighten their skin, but the light think they're unattractive so go to tanning salons or paint themselves to be darker. People are insane. Ever meet a racist who tans? I have. It's a weird concept, really. "A Watcher scoffs at gravity!"

I once met George on holiday at a bar in Beverly Hills. The man's amazing GLOW even left an impression on this b/w photo I had taken with him...

Just for context, the paper bag test was also the standard used to measure which patrons would be allowed into a place of business in the pre-Civil Rights era United States. If you were darker than the bag, you were often not allowed service. An old adage from that practice goes, "White is alright. Yellow is mellow. Brown -- Stick around. Black -- get back!" I have heard of that test. Bleh. If you're naturally close to that colour, well 3 cheers for you. If not? Learn to work what you've got. You'll be happier for it. "A Watcher scoffs at gravity!"
