I went to New York as a young person and I had no problems. People were really nice. You just have to walk around like you own the place.

You'll be ok. I went to New York the first time by myself when I was 21. My flight got in at 9 at night and I navigated my way into the city on the subway all by myself. My mother was a nervous wreck, though.

2) Don't shop in any stores in the times square area that say going out of business sale
3) There really isn't a red light district anymore
4) Scores is on 61st and 1st
5) Take the staten island ferry to staten island. It's free, you go past the statue of liberty..take the return trip and see an amazing view of lower manhattan
6) Go to Soho, the West Village..you can find some good inexpensive restaurants

8) If you want Pizza, go to John's in the village
9) The musuem of art will let you in for free..you really don't have to make a donation
10) Walk around central park..it's beautiful. do it during the daytime though
11) Don't expect alot of public bathrooms..but hotels have to let you use theirs
12) don't walk around looking up all the time
13) Try St. Marks place for some bohemian flavor and wrecka stows

nyc is actually quite sane and pretty safe. ny of old when it was scary and dangerous is long gone. people are generally very friendly and love to give directions.

don't let anyone ask you for shit. i think the biggest threat left in NYC is the con artists.

wellll, in all fairness i had a job at an information desk when i lived in NYC, so when i was off duty, the last thing i wanted was people coming up to me asking me questions.
