George Carlin. He's more into stand-up comedy than acting, although Kevin Smith has given him a few parts here and there.

I'm talking about people that are mostly known for something else but who have also tried acting in movies on occasion.

My vote would go to David Bowie. He really takes acting seriously and does a fantastic job, in my opinion. Very versatile and believable. If he hadn't prioritized his career in music I'm sure he would have had an excellent one in the movie business.

A few examples of other "non-actor actors" of various quality:

Jennifer Lopez
Mos Def
Ice Cube
Angie Everhart
Michael Moore
David Cronenberg
Eminem
Jon Bon Jovi

Mos Def is very good. He is getting killer reviews for the new Bruce Willis movie he is in.

If we're including stand up comics then there are ONLY 2 people that can make this list: Tom Hanks and Jamie Foxx - Oscar winners.

tom hanks was a stand-up? i know he did a movie with sally field about being a stand-up comic, but at most i thought he just did some improv before he got into tv and movies.

though if we're including stand up comics, i gotta include sandra bernhard. her performance in 'king of comedy' is classic.

Tom Hanks started off as a stand-up comedian before he got "Bosom Buddies."

When exactly do you consider he started acting? I believe he had some bit TV parts in the late 80's. His first official record was Urban Thermo Dynamics in 94, but he was blowing up on mix tapes from Brooklyn YEARS before that. He started rhyming when he was, like, 10.

Started rhyming means what? Nothing really. Anyone can start rhyming, but when were you KNOWN for rhyming? And blowing-up to whose standards? Locally or Nationally? He was known for his acting before he was known for his rapping. His acting debut was 1988 in "God Bless The Child"...I'm PRETTY sure his rapping wasn't going strong at that point. And I'm also pretty sure he didn't get KNOWN for his music until the mid 90s.

Local stuff doesn't count...stuff like "He was in my cousin's basement rapping 4th of July in 85"...That can be said for just about ANY artist...the thing is, when did they get KNOWN for their craft?

Unfortunately this is nothing more than a website, so I'll let you get your kicks by acting tough "kid" Sorry for the temporary thread jacking people. Carry on
