i don't understand why people say things like "people who are into animal rights should focus their energy on helping the children, because children are more important than animals."

well,

1. why is it an either/or proposition? if you care about one, is it illegal to care about the other?

2. what's so wrong about having respect for all living things?

you can do what you want, but i AM seeing you making value judgments left and right on this thread, and i wonder why it's so important to you to belittle and dismiss those whose beliefs are different than yours, when those beliefs aren't hurting anyone.

It isn't an either or proposition. But you don't see people running out an throwing paint on child molesters. I just think people with this much passion and energy could do wonders to help children, as I stated. Not an either or situtation. You are putting words in my mouth.

Just because you disagree with me dosn't mean I am attacking you. I was talking about people you and I will never meet. I wasn't talking about you. Dont' you think it is a little egocentric that you keep bringing my words back to an attack on you?

Show me where I deliberately set out to belittle you. Unless you are Heather McCartney or Alec Baldwin in which case I guess we do have a personal disagreement. wink

no, i did not see that episode on Larry King Live, so i can't comment on it. and your link doesn't provide any information either.

personally, i see groups like PETA as watchdogs of corporate giants like KFC, whose multi-million dollar ad campaigns do not give the average consumer the information he needs to make healthy decisions.

if you watch the undercover footage and still want to eat meat, be my guest. all we can do is put the information out there.

my comments were made to point out that the perception of animal rights people as myopic, pampered and uncaring about social justice is simply not what my experience has been. you're entitled to your opinion, no doubt - but it's awfully easy to sling mud when a genuine discussion would be much more constructive.

My link was just a jump off point I am not a fan of paste and clip discussions. You said you weren't aware of what I was talking about so I found a reference. It was simply the first thing I could find refering to a specific instance I could think off. If you want to know more about their opinions it isn't hard to research it's a popular topic.

I will say again, my statements have been very clear. I was speaking very specifically about something which bothered me. I won't quote my position again. I made no generalizations about PETA specifically either. The only reason I mentioned PETA was because these "myopic, pampered" snobs which irked me to begin with spoke on behalf of PETA.

You and Anx have both tried to make this personal by implying I have called you names or criticized your beliefs. I have not, I will not. If I have show me where.

I do wish that passionate, organized people like PETA would put their energy into helping abused children or preventing crimes against children because I value the lives and happiness of children above all else. But that is a topic for another discussion.

all i can say is that maybe we both could have made it clearer what we were talking about. i did take your comments (in response to MickG's post) personally, since they appeared to apply to ALL PETA members, of which i am one. had you clarified that you were talking about celebrities (although i don't much see a difference, since the campaigns are campaigns, whether they are supported by celebs or regular folks like me), maybe i wouldn't have taken it personally. i take your word for it that you weren't talking about regular PETA members, and i appreciate you listening to my points, as i am listening to yours.

again, i would like to mention that those of us who are advocating for animal rights aren't not advocating children's rights or civil rights or women's rights at the same time. please know that many of us are able to spread our compassion across all sorts of causes, and in an effective way.

people like Anx have impressed me with their very calm, reasonable approach to vegetarianism. i hope you'll take the opportunity to listen to people like him and realize that it truly is not an all-or-nothing game. we have an opportunity to learn from each other - let's not waste that opportunity on petty "i'm righter than you" arguments... peace

I'm afraid I don't share your assesment of Anx's approach on this(an only this) thread. I made a specicifc statement about specific people which he read as an attack against him and justification to attack me. Read back on the posts you'll see what I'm saying.

I was never arguing with anyone. I was just saying how I felt about these individuals and why. Anx never defended them, just defended himself and attacked me, strange approach. Again I'm not going to argue about this either, just read the posts it's pretty clear what happened. shrug

i didn't attack you, though i do think your "arguments" are all semantics and debate-team smoke & mirrors, and no, ahem, meat. i don't play like that, so when you want to talk sense, let's pick this back up sometime, k? hug

look, if you want to be an unapologetic omnivore, then whoop-de-doo for you. let's strike up the band and have a parade for your eating habits, seriously.

at the end of the day, your comments say more about your own insecurities than they do about the worthlessness of vegetarianism.

I guess I miss interpereted these comments as being personal and directed at me rather than a general discussion about celebrity comments. My bad.
