It's always easy to point a finger and say what is wrong.

For example: did you ever notice that the people who beat the war drums for peta are often papmpered, spoiled, overly paid... people of such breeding they have no real conserns in their life other then "animal cruelty"? They I am sure never lived the lifestyle of those people beating up on the chickens.

I think I will go get me a bucket of KFC today.

Yeah, they are always crying and belly aching about some distant culture who eats dogs. Meanwhile they sip champagne and are served by private chefs.

They never stop to think that perhaps these people eat dogs because they might have somewhat fewer options then say, Alec Baldwin or the wife of Paul McCartney have available to them.

i'm poor as f*ck and i've had no problem being a vegetarian for over half my life. i don't understand what class or privilege has to do with it. i could counter and complain about rich folks who get off on eating "exotic" meats like zebra and ostrich and stuff, and how equally repugnant that is.

You missed the point. I would hazard a guess that you don't have as limited options in your "poor" life as many of theses cultures who are criticized for their eating habits.

I imagine your vegetarian diet contains a variety of food many of these cultures doesn't even know exists.

I find nothing repugnant about eating exotic farmed (I'm not a hunter so my personal feeling is that is not necessary in western society) meats. Even if I did that would not be a "counter" to my original point. It would just be a seperate observation.

Just because we have the luxury of choosing to be vegetarian doesn't change the fact that humans are omnivorous animals. A bear isn't being barbaric when it eats fish is it?

one point at a time.

try living in a small town in indiana without eating meat. that's exactly what i did, for several years. and i managed fine. this was back in the late '80s, before even smalltown america had as many options as it does now. i learned to cook certain things for myself. i paid attention to what i was eating. i tried certain vegetables and products that were new to me.

in other words, i made a simple effort.

look, if you want to be an unapologetic omnivore, then whoop-de-doo for you. let's strike up the band and have a parade for your eating habits, seriously. but don't go criticizing people who make an effort and maintain a discipline because they honestly believe they're doing something positive for their own health, for the world, and for other living creatures. at the end of the day, your comments say more about your own insecurities than they do about the worthlessness of vegetarianism.

Very great. Very noble of you. You are still proving my point. You had choices. You made them. I'm not talking about you.

The people I'm talking about are these bleeding heart PETA types who are talking about people who don't have the choice. They are eating what is avavilable in order to survive.

I have not once criticized vegetarianism. Not once. I have not said vegetarianism is worthless. Not once not even a little. I don't know why you are so fixated on this being about you. I never criticized you or your life choices.

I am criticizing those rich snobs with options coming out their asses who go on tv and weep and cry for the injustices they say are done on the poor doggies by people who have no options.

Believe it or not this isn't the only topic the PETA Celeb's have brought up recently.

Being this thread was inspired by Pam's video I referenced another recent PETA concern which bothered me. If you aren't aware of it or don't care about it then don't respond.

Easy.

so are you saying you're unhappy with the campaign because a celebrity is endorsing it? do you think ted nugent is equally repugnant for endorsing game hunting? or is joan rivers distasteful for endorsing the fur industry?

They are both repugnant and not only for the reasons you've stated.

I am saying I am unhappy with exactly what I have said. I stated my position more than once.

If you don't agree that's ok.

If you think think some poor people in a village thousands of miles from here with ten food options should live on banana's to save fish, dogs and chickens that is your opinion.

I think they are doing what they have to to survive and it is none of Pam Anderson's or Alec Baldwin's damn business. If they were in that position I guarantee you their opinions would be different

for the life of me, i'm not aware of a campaign that wants people in developing countries to stop eating meat. if it exists, i would very much like to know about it and talk to my friends at PETA about it. so could you give me some information on that campaign you're referring to?

Now your aware of it. And it isn't just about eating them. It is about showing short, horrific clips out of context to those of us with every oprtunity in the world and pointing our fingers at those evil people in other countries with almost no opporunities.

Didn't you watch Larry King? It was a big night for PETA. Scare the crap out of everybody without setting the clip up in any kind of social or economic context. It is one of the hottest topics on the PETA plate.

no, i did not see that episode on Larry King Live, so i can't comment on it. and your link doesn't provide any information either.

personally, i see groups like PETA as watchdogs of corporate giants like KFC, whose multi-million dollar ad campaigns do not give the average consumer the information he needs to make healthy decisions.

if you watch the undercover footage and still want to eat meat, be my guest. all we can do is put the information out there.

my comments were made to point out that the perception of animal rights people as myopic, pampered and uncaring about social justice is simply not what my experience has been. you're entitled to your opinion, no doubt - but it's awfully easy to sling mud when a genuine discussion would be much more constructive.

My link was just a jump off point I am not a fan of paste and clip discussions. You said you weren't aware of what I was talking about so I found a reference. It was simply the first thing I could find refering to a specific instance I could think off. If you want to know more about their opinions it isn't hard to research it's a popular topic.

I will say again, my statements have been very clear. I was speaking very specifically about something which bothered me. I won't quote my position again. I made no generalizations about PETA specifically either. The only reason I mentioned PETA was because these "myopic, pampered" snobs which irked me to begin with spoke on behalf of PETA.

You and Anx have both tried to make this personal by implying I have called you names or criticized your beliefs. I have not, I will not. If I have show me where.

I do wish that passionate, organized people like PETA would put their energy into helping abused children or preventing crimes against children because I value the lives and happiness of children above all else. But that is a topic for another discussion.

i don't understand why people say things like "people who are into animal rights should focus their energy on helping the children, because children are more important than animals."

well,

1. why is it an either/or proposition? if you care about one, is it illegal to care about the other?

2. what's so wrong about having respect for all living things?

you can do what you want, but i AM seeing you making value judgments left and right on this thread, and i wonder why it's so important to you to belittle and dismiss those whose beliefs are different than yours, when those beliefs aren't hurting anyone.
