High Art comes to mind. (If you've not seen this film rent it now! Fantastic!!)
I guess all one has to do is check which nation's have multiple city festivals of gay/lesbian/transgendered films. New York, Chicago, Los Angeles, Philadelphia, Miami, and many other US cities all have gay film fests and this would suggest an industry which illustrates fluid sexuality.

If you're going to portray sexuality then you should dive into it in all its juicy glory. A few countries have been brave enough to do this, but the US isn't one of them. i love you for saying that i prefer "chthonic miasma."

If so then I wouldn't exactly be surprised if the U.S. was "out in front" in terms of achieving that dynamic in films... I was surprised by Germany though, although it's not like I know much about German films. This all came up at a German movie I saw last night called Go for Zucker that included bisexuality in a very matter-of-fact, run-of-the-mill way. Not only that, it was a jewish comedy which is even more unusual, coming out of Germany. Not only that, but bisexuality and homosexuality can be seen here in MTV videos, or in regular tv commercials for consumer services like mobile phone companies. Our soap and body lotion commercials, for example, always have the model nude. The thing is, because the sexuality aspect of these examples is not portrayed in a lurid fashion, rather than in a straight, matter-of-fact kind of way, you're never shocked by the content or presentation of it... I know I'm a geek, but that was my #1 movie for 2004 on my own personal top 10 list. I'm a huge Bertolucci fan. The way he deals with repressed sexuality and its connection to politics is genius! Which reminds of another film that fits this thread: The Conformist
