There's groups within the gay community that are voluntarily contracting HIV, and more or less treating it like chicken pox, just get it over with. It's kind of a bizzare extreme, but it almost seems like some people are just wore out from all the fear/confusion/uncertainty over HIV and AIDs.

Just an FYI, this is not just a "coastal" trend...it's all over the place in the midwest now as far as I can tell. At work we occasionally check out Craig's List just to see what and how folks are seeking sex on-line and 50%+ of a typical batch of messages specify that they are seeking to bareback.

What it's all from?

I think we've hit on a few things: disease fatigue, seeking infection, crystal meth, etc. I also think the newest generation of queer boys do not understand HIV/AIDS as well as they didn't experience the mass death of the 80s thru the mid 90s. They have come of age bombarded by messages about HIV just being a chronic infection. They have been bombarded by drug ads in queer publications which make it seem like it's no big deal to be on meds. They aren't being shown the reality of what HIV can do so it just doesn't mean much. I'm generalizing here but I think this plays heavily into it.

As for those of us who "should" know better. It's like any other risk behavior. Just cos we know doesn't mean we can do it. Folks chose to drive without seatbelts all the time. Folks chose to leave their motorcycle helmet at home. Folks (like me) still smoke. Folks still drink in mass amounts and sometimes get behind the wheel. Folks still inhale unhealthy foods in mass amounts. Sex is like any other basic activity. In spite of all that we are taught, people are sometimes unwilling to do the "safe" thing.

Isn't it illegal to purposely infect someone? Can't you get tried for murder or something like that?

I know that people in the UK have been charged with grevious bodily harm for deliberately infecting people. It should be viewed more seriously than that IMO. nod

I don't understand it either.

Maybe people still believe you can "tell" if someone is infected. Or maybe they're tired of hearing about the dangers of sex. Maybe they don't believe HIV/AIDS is real, or they think there's a cure for it. Maybe they think that because they're gay, the disease is inevitable so they might as well get it over with. Maybe they're just selfish.

i'm on the fence with this...on the one hand, if someone is infected with HIV and raping people there should eb a statute that allows them to be charged at a higher level. On the other hand, if the sex is consensual, BOTH parties are responsible. If you are willing to let someone fuck you without a condom, in my opinion you are allowing yourself to be placed at risk and therefore share the responsibility.
