Some people NEVER get a country-club hookup that lands them in Yale or on a weekend-MBA track. Does that make them bad -- or, even -- worthy of our derision and ridicule, just because we're wealthy enough to chat at the Org in our free time? is there a big price descrepancy between a child's bike and a used adult bike? it really isn't that expensive to be a used adult bike so if these men are riding bikes because other modes of transportation are too expensive, why are they riding the baby bikes and not one that's made for someone their size? no one is saying that they need to be riding the lastest model ten speed but a child's bike? it seems a bit like a fashion statement. i mean, i've seen these guys riding really teeny bikes. they can probably walk faster than they can ride those bikes. Honestly, I don't know. I've seen it, too. It makes me scratch my head, as much as younger brothas who sport their jeans halfway down their legs, their shoes undone, their hair uncombed, their faces unwashed, their clothes way too big... I'm not denying the dysfunctional nature of any of those phenomena. I'm just cautioning against classist judgments.

I see grown men in Thailand riding small, beaten up women's bikes all the time and think nothing of it. It's a practical, economical way to get around if you can't afford to own and run a car. They don't seem in the least bit self-conscious about it. I just wanted to ask you whether you believed the "saving his resources for other, positive things" explanation to be a common reason for an adult male to be riding around on a small bicycle, the desire not to generalise put aside for a moment. Do you believe it to be possible, typical, or even common?

Someone told me that those small bikes were originally used for tricks because of their stability or something like that...that's how they got to be cool. dunno if that's true.

There's a crew in Portland, OR who exist solely for this purpose (or at least used to... I think the authorities got onto them). Except in Portland they're not so much ghetto as "indie-rock kids"... they ride on little girly pink bikes and trikes with streamers, bells and flowery baskets from the highermost point of the city to downtown at midnight, where they tie up the bikes in one miasma of malapropriated kiddiness. It's just to be cool, I guess? I never understood it. I guess it made me laugh a bit at first.

The bike itself may be an economic thing, and maybe a grown man feels silly not being able to afford a car, so he goes the extra step and rides a kiddie bike to show he's not afraid of looking silly. Plenty of guys riding adult bikes look dorky (not all, I'm just saying...).
Similarly I see high school boys with pink Hello Kitty backpacks. People embrace the ridiculous--pants around the ankles, huge sunglasses, Paris Hilton, nuclear weapons Check this song out at:
