Space Heaters: Are They Safe or a Fire Hazard?

With the cost of gas prices this year, I've kept the heat a bit lower and have been using a space heater to keep warm this winter. When my mom heard that I had a space heater, she got on my case, saying space heaters are not safe, they cause fires, etc. etc. Truth is, the space heater is in good condition. It will shut off automatically if it gets tipped over (a good safety feature to have), I don't use an extension cord with it, and I shut it off and unplug it when I'm not in the room. What are your thoughts?

i keep two oscillating heaters running constantly, along with my two electric fireplaces. i haven't turned on my gas yet this year and my bill last month was $355! that is $55 LOWER than my average monthly bill last year--so i figure i'm ahead of the game. they automatically come on at 65 degrees
you look better on your facebook page than you do in person hmph!

eyepop $355? That's a lot of money! I don't blame you for having heaters and electric fireplaces going 24/7, shoot, I would too, if it meant getting a lower gas bill.

everybody at work has them, but i think they aren't suppose to have them though. They haven't passed around a memo or anything about winter no no's and such....i had bought one and put one in my cube, then an hour later, the power went out in 2 sections of cubes including mine....

i didn't realize it at first, but after a while, i began to realize maybe it was because of my space heater...so when the security people started coming around, i started to notice that they were looking primarily at the floor..for space heaters to confiscate....

i immediately hid mine so that they wouldn't take it..i was gonna just take it back to the store and get my money back....but i felt so guilty that i was the cause for all the confusion....

then afterwards, when the power came back on 3 hours later...the word around the building was that they found a lot and i mean a lot of space heaters, i don't know if they took them all but it was like cube after cube people had heaters and they weren't suppose to...

i know one thing, people are still using them, especially the managers...
I will forever love and miss you...my sweet Prince.
