(Don't) Steal This Book

So I've been reading this book called "A Million Little Pieces". It's a heart wrenching, gut turning, mind twisting, soul churnning story about a 23 year old kid fighting his way out of drug/alcohol abuse, self hatred and basic human disfunction. The best part is it's a true story, James Frey's memoir.(or so I thought confused)

I've been fighting my way through this book the past few weeks. I can relate all to well to James's struggles, at times I become so emotional I have to put the book down and walk away. At times it was just all too much. This book was meaning something to me.... UNTIL I found out the author's a fraud and he made the whole thing up.

Check this shit out: http://www.thesmokinggun....frey1.html

I feel so betrayed.

Oh AND...

On the news last night they said that Frey tryed to sell it to 17 publishers as a work of FICTION and was rejected by all 17 publishers before he submitted it as a memoir and got it published. pout

Oh yah nod it'z like an emotional fraud from what i've observed!! The author gets you right in, especially by tellin you the story is based on something that actually happened. They get you right in and then BOOM at the end. IT's terrible from the reader's perspective at the end but the author is laughing $$$ !!

I don't think they're saying the whole thing (book) is fabricated, just that he perhaps exaggerated how much legal trouble he was in?

A similar controversy has arisen about JT Leroy, the author of The Heart is Deceitful Above All Things.

And the he claims one of his best friendsa s a kid died in a train wreck that he was part responsible for, and that caused a lot of his self hatred which lead to his drug abuse , but the kid's parents say he had nothing to do with the train wreck, and hardly knew the dead girl at all.

I've never read the book, but when you view the book as a piece of art that you like, you shouldn't feel betrayed.

It's still a good book, but he said it was his real life. The fact he lied to make money pisses me off.

well, at least he wrote a moving piece of fiction that got to see the light of day. with all the crap that gets published nowadays, there should be a celebration whenever a an actual work of art breaks through.

i understand the feeling of betrayal but the fact that this man can even write such a moving and compelling book speaks to his talent.

of course, the fact that he had to lie to get his book published says a great deal about publishing world. that's a damn shame.
