Hostel - There are just some movies I'll leave to the imagination

THere is a movie coming out this weekend called Hostel directed by the guy who did Cabin Fever and Tarantino was a mentor for the film. It apparently has so much gore you may lose your lunch.

While the premise, 2 guys backbacking in Europe who inadvertantly end up being victims to a secret torture ring/clique where the richest and sickest will pay gobs of money to torture as they see fit to an innocent person, intrigues me the notion of excessive violence AND gore just doesn't appeal to me. I mean there is SAW and then there is THIS.

I know it's all for shock and to be uber violent. I dunno...scary and good horror used to not equal extreme violence and gore. The guy did say he sent Rob Zombie a thank you note for paving the way with Devils Rejects.

I think when I decided that I didn't need to see things was with Red Dragon, the sequel/prequel...whatever to Silence of the Lambs.

This Movie looks OUTRAGEOUS and I'm ALL OVER IT! As long as it's not an actual snuff film, I'm 'bout it 'bout it! With certain topics I enjoy seeing lines get pushed.

I have to confess that I love voilence in movies. NOT IN REAL LIFE. I definately want to see this. I hope it's not just about "oooh look what I'm going to do to this person" then it becomes silly. I hope it's creative, spooky and somewhat believeable. I don't think I've ever felt naseaus in a movie. Oh, hold up. PINK FLAMINGOS was the only movie that really made me want to hurl. But that was real.

After his directorial debut with CABIN FEVER, Eli Roth certainly carved out a name for himself among horror fans far and wide. While it is not the most serious movie by any means, and just bursting at the seams with homage, it is definitely a nice ride with a lot of splat and shtick. Many genre fans out there were a little turned off by the overuse of humor, but there is something to Eli that says he has what it takes to make a “balls out” horror flick. All of those who have had these hopes and dreams – myself included – can now relish in the fact that they have come true with HOSTEL!

With Roth’s breakout film, he gave his respects to his favorite horror films through the years - a little EVIL DEAD, a dash of LAST HOUSE ON THE LEFT and a drop or two of CHAINSAW thrown in for good measure. With his second film he has been given a little bit of a different path for inspiration and influence, from the far, far east. He was introduced to a little film by the name of AUDITION directed by the bewitching Japanese director Takashi Miike. Roth fell in love with the way that his films played out with such beauty and that it isn’t pulling any punches. As soon as the idea came to him for what would become HOSTEL, he knew the style needed to portray just the right mood.

Before starting grad school Paxton (Jay Hernandez) and Josh (Derek Richardson) decided to take a backpacking journey across Europe. They cross paths with an Icelandic drifter, Oli (Eythor Gudjonsson), and the three of them travel together seeing the sights - and the women. While spending a pot hazed night out and about in Amsterdam they meet a guy who tells them about an unlisted Hostel in Bratislava where the girls are hot, horny and go for anyone with an accent, especially that of an American. Once they arrive at this mysterious Hostel they are not disappointed, beautiful women everywhere and they are all over them. Things are going great until they wake up to realize that their Icelandic pal is missing, and the next day Josh comes up missing as well. Paxton runs into the girls they were last with and is taken to where his friend supposedly is, only to find an old factory full of screaming people taken hostage and put into rooms where they succumb to horrible torture and ultimately their death.

The story starts out with lighthearted comedy and sex (that FEVER did so well) and a lot of nudity, but then when it starts to get dark - it gets very dark. Horror and humor do tend to go hand-in-hand, having his first film with a little too much humor; it is nice to see a better balance is found. While the lighthearted opening is nice and good to watch, that is not what people are going to be rushing to theatres for. When you have names like Roth and Quentin Tarantino (who is an executive producer) on a film there is bound to be some very interesting footage within.

The tortuous gore department is one that definitely excels, causing everything from applause and laughter to shuddering and head turning in the audience. A gorehound is not going to be disappointed with the multitude of devious torture, savage killing and even a pedicure that trims a little too close. Thankfully there is an abundance of practical FX, instead of relying on the cheesy cartoonish look that CGI gives, all thanks to the lovely people at KNB FX and their amazing work. Not often do you get to see drills used as torture devices these days let alone with the realism and close-ups that are used in this film. It is amazing what good having Tarantino’s name on a film can do when it comes to the ratings board. Sure movies like FREDDY VS. JASON had tons of death and blood but it was done in such an outlandish way that it becomes beyond the realm of normality; however when you have a film that takes young kidnapped backpackers put in rooms to be tortured to death by real people, those in charge of ratings (for some odd reason) do not seem to approve.

Some mention must be made in regards to the casting, since the Icelandic actor Eythor, and “King of the Swing,” is just so awesome. Every scene that he is in he definitely steals; hopefully this will not be the last that we see of him. Another member of the cast that deserves some recognition is the inspiration behind this madness, Miike himself in a cameo appearance. His role has one line and is onscreen for all of 20 seconds, but it is great to see him in front of the camera for once. Though it is a little sad that no former cast from “Boy Meets World” made their way into this film, there are a lot of gorgeous European women to help ease the mourning over the lack of Shawn.

As great as this movie is there are the fair share of faults, the main one being the character development - or lack there of. There is nothing at all that binds the audience to the characters so when some die (or are well on their way) it’s no skin off your back as to their fate. As sad as it is to say, the missing character development does not take away from the film that much. Sure it would be a nice addition and make the flick even better, but most fans of the genre are going to flock to theatres on the hunt to see something that will gross them and their friends out.

The trailers for HOSTEL make it look very SAW-ish, which might be the direction Lion’s Gate took to draw in on an existing fan base, but it is definitely a different film. Not that the SAW films are bad, because they are great, but this flick is way more graphic and much more cringe inducing. Definitely go check this out, take the wife, girlfriend or squeamish acquaintance and relish in their wincing and squirming.
you look better on your facebook page than you do in person hmph!

wow, i thought the rape scene was excruciating to watch, simply sickening. The acting and shooting style made it seem real. How is breaking her anus open and then beating and cracking her face in as she cries and passes out in terror and pain and shock simply "just some chick getting humped"?

I don't question the reality of the pleasure that you can get from witnessing the destruction of a human being, this human quality has been around forever. I do question whether it's evolutionarily valuable to us as the ruling animal of this planet.

I loved creative gore when the splatter films made their debut in my youth, and I do love the original Texas Chainsaw, but I don't really enjoy these new ultra realistic films in light of a new found feeling for human preservation and love in my older age.

That said, I would still kill someone in self defense.

"Cabin Fever" really sucked though...

... and I'm really only a fan of the first Evil Dead movie (seems so much more hardcore in flavor), the 2nd is too silly wink wink, and the third gets boring!

I did just get "Bad Taste".... need to watch that one.

yes, the bootleg "broken" clip is a simulated s&m snuff video intercut with music videos. I saw it in 1994.
