Favorite fiction authors? anybody here dig reading? like, novels and stuff?
Personally, I love Michael Crichton. I've just recently rediscovered him. I'd read everything of his up through Rising Sun and Disclosure throughout the mid-90's, and just since last week, I've caught up on Prey, State Of Fear (excellent) and Airframe. Timeline and The Lost World are up next, then I'll be caught up. But I may go back and re-read some of the old ones, especially Congo, Jurrasic Park and Sphere. anyway, i love him, because i feel like he's one of the few fiction writers that can successfully tie together a very interesting plot full of intrigue, mystery and action PLUS cram a whole load of factual information into the story. you feel like you've actually LEARNED something on top of being entertained. so ... who do you guys like? Nick Hornby is my favourite author.
The first book I read by him was Fever Pitch (made into a movie with Colin Firth) I also read About a Boy (made into a movie with Hugh Grant which I haven't seen) Then I read High Fidelity (also made into a movie with John Cussack) I have read a couple more of his books too. He's a good author, imho Put yourself on the worldwide org map! www.frappr.com/princeorg

In no particular order;
Jon Courtenay Grimwood (read the Arabesk series; amazing) Umberto Eco (must admit, I do not like all his books, but The Name Of The Rose is one of my favourite books EVER) Brady Udall (just one book, but it reminded me of an early John Irving, so I am going to keep an eye out for his new work) John Irving (his early work makes me forget his last not so interesting books, loved the last one again though) Roddy Doyle (love, love, looooove this writer. True. Nitty gritty, my kind of humor) Jonathan Carroll (Stephen King is one of his fans, but I think this guy writes better fantastic storeis than King does... check Sleeping In Flame and The Wooden Sea) Phillip Pullman (wrote some books with a Tolkien scope, but with a modern vision) Garth Nix (my fave children book writer of the moment, his Keys To The Kingdom series has got me going all potty, like the first few Potter books) Thea Beckman wrote wonderful children books. Her books transported me to the far east, an after apocalypse Greenland (she is also a seer, it seems), midieval times. She wrote my fave children book EVER: Crusade In Jeans, which is being turned into a book. I am sure the movie won't be able to beat the good memories I have of it. Haven't delphed into the classic, but will, maybe, later on. [Edited 12/29/05 3:10am]

Recently I've enjoyed:
T.C. Boyle--entertaining fiction, often with a environmental message. Kind of like Tom Robbins, but less wacky & less overtly clever. Philip Pullman--His Dark Materials Trilogy--The Golden Compass, The Subtle Knife, & The Amber Spyglass--are some of the most entertaining and deepest books I've read in a long time. They're kind of children's books, but mostly because the heroes are children, and there's no cussing. Fantasy on the order of Tolkein (but not wizards or elves). Dan Brown--his books turn the pages by themselves. Check this song out at:
