Do mommy's always know best?

Mommy myths
Do mothers always know best?
MythBusters is one of my favourite series. There are many cool quizzes on Discovery's page, the following 'Myth or Fact?' list is based on one of the MythBuster quizzes.

1. If you sit too close to the TV, you will ruin your eyes.
2. If you crack your knuckles, they will get bigger.
3. If you go outside in the cold with wet hair, you will get sick.
4. If you swallow chewing gum, it will take seven years to digest and pass through your system.
5. If you eat carrots, your vision will improve.
6. If you eat chocolate, your face will break out.
7. If you go swimming less than an hour after eating, you will get stomach cramps and drown.
8. If you get sick, you should starve a fever and feed a cold.
9. If you stare at the sun, even during an eclipse, you could go blind.
TRUE! Direct sunlight can damage the retina — light-sensitive nerve endings in the back of the eye — causing impaired vision or blindness. You should never look directly at the sun. Dark sunglasses or even a welder's helmet will not protect your eyes, not even during an eclipse.
10. If you want to stay healthy and properly hydrated, you must drink eight glasses of water per day.
11. If you are pregnant, you should avoid cat litter boxes.
TRUE! While cats themselves pose little danger to a pregnant woman, there is a parasite associated with cat feces that causes an infection known as toxoplasmosis. If the mother contracts it, the infection can harm her unborn child's eyes and brain. Expectant mothers are advised not to change their cat's litter, and to avoid handling sick cats.
12. If you swallow a watermelon seed, it will grow in your stomach.
13. If you shave, the hair will grow back thicker and darker.
14. If you cover a wart with duct tape, it will go away.
TRUE! Recent studies have shown that covering a wart with duct tape is actually more effective at removing it than the common doctor's office treatment of freezing it with liquid nitrogen. While the duct tape treatment may take a little longer than some other methods, there is no pain or risk of skin damage, it costs mere pennies, and no doctor's office visit is required.

MANY PEOPLE DO NOT REALIZE that almonds, as well as common fruits such as cherries, plums, apples, pears, peaches, and apricots, are related to roses, but all are gifts to agriculture from the Rose Family. Fewer people still realize that all the seeds of these plants & their wild relations are poisonous, though children are traditionally warned to avoid eating apple seeds- with good reason. http://museum.gov.ns.ca/p.../roses.htm
