Where do you live?

I'm just on the southside of downtown Minneapolis. (Phillips neighborhood for those who know...)

There are worse neighborhoods in MPLS but it is full of crackheads and vandals...

sigh

What a nice way to start a Monday....

I know...ghetto folks can be a pain. And it probably costs too much to get a garage space.

A Car Battery? disbelief that's so WRONG! comfort so sorry kitty. hug That totally totally sucks ass.

Maybe Althom has a pair of undies you can toss in there. No one in their right mind would touch your car then.

Oh kittie, that SUX!!!

Did you file a claim? Was there any music theft?

It's strange that someone would have the balls to do that, thinking that no one would hear or see it. This could be a really stupid question, but could you somehow rig the hood so that it locks? Do you think your insurance will cover it? The only upside I can see is that you'll have a fresh battery for Winter if they do.

Like a key that would be needed to open the hood???? SO you can keep your car unlocked but Crackhead Jimmy can't get under the hood.

I will report the theft to the police. The last battery cost about $60 to replace (thank goodness I know handy straight boys, lol) so if it IS covered by insurance, it would still be under the deductible.

I've thought about trying to rig a lock on the hood or battery, but I'm afraid that would just cause someone to actually break things if they break in.

The battery that was stolen today was just a few months old....there was no music theft as I only have the factory issued AM/FM radio in the car. So far no hood rats have wanted that smile
[Edited 12/19/05 8:23am]

If it's hard to unlock...they'll move to the next car. That's my thinking. I do see your point though...putting a lock could cause more damage if they do something to break the lock. But I think a crackhead won't have a crowbar with him to get at your battery, it's make way to much noise to crowbar your hood. And it's so much easier to break the window on the car next to you than to really go at the hood of a car. I mean if there were DRUGS or MONEY under the hood, then I can see them doing their worst giggle but a battery...they will just move to the next car.

I never checked my messages this morning and apparantly Amy's car wouldn't start because of the -8 temperatures so sometimes even having a battery isn't good enough.

But then again she drives a KIA and as Carrot Top said they should give you boots, hats, and gloves when you buy a Kia because if it snows or is cold you will be walking smile

Well, to try and avoid future broken windows, I follow the police suggestion and keep my car unlocked and clubbed.

Back when I owned a Miata, I remember one of the favorite topics on Miata discussion forums was whether to lock the doors or not. One side argued that locking your door was asking to get your covertible top cut open with a knife. The other side argued that leaving your car unlocked was an invitation for people to rummage around in your car. (One owner found a homeless person sleeping in his car... you'd think one could find a more comfortable car to sleep in than a Miata.) There were also stories of people who got a hard time from their insurance company when their car was stolen after being left unlocked.

I personally kept mine locked, left absolutely nothing of value inside the car (so the crackheads would pick someone else's car), and carried good comprehensive insurance coverage. Nobody ever messed with it.

IMHO the Club isn't much good, except against inexperienced car theives who are looking to steal the car itself. I know of two ways to defeat the Club. In fact, I've read stories of people who went to their car and found an empty space, with their Club on the ground. sad

Sorry to see this has happened to you often enough that people knew this thread was about you getting your car broken into. sad

It makes me think of the scene in Robocop where they have a "commercial" for a car alarm system that blows up the thief in the drivers' seat when they try to steal the car.

My Fiat Spider had an aftermarket hood lock installed, presumably by the original owner. However, the battery was in the trunk. confuse The one good thing was that I could disable the car by disconnecting the distributer wire and then locking the hood to prevent anyone from reconnecting it (if they could even guess why the car wouldn't start).

BTW, pre-2006 Miatas and some BMW's (e.g., the 1987 325 I used to own) have their batteries in the trunk as well.

Nope, nobody seems to want factory sound systems... not even the Bose I had in the Miata. (And anyone who stole it would be in for an unpleasant surprise... the Bose head unit won't work with standard car amplifiers and speakers.)

Anyway, I'm sorry to hear about your theft. hug

I've had quite a mild time of it, in the last few months (touch wood).

My only problem at the minute is that my mail goes into a mailbox within the lobby and somebody keeps stealing it! I haven't figured out who or how and I'm seriously considering investing in a hidden camera.

I'm sorry about your car battery.

I was wondering if it might be possible to temporarily remove the hood latch at night so it would be a pain to try and pop it. I'm not sure what kind of car you have or if the handle comes off but it might be worth a try.

Not really, though I was being facetious. If it was your car that was broken into repeatedly, you might feel differently. I think It'd be a good lesson to learn and they would never do it again.

I think the Club has a guarantee about your car not being stolen...but I am probably wrong.

This so reminds me of when I had to "watch" my friends car while he was out of town. To avoid tickets and a high parking garage fee, my friend found an area where where he can keep his car and only have to move it once a week. SO that "job" was mine. Of course the area of parking was in a not so great neighborhood. I recall after the first week...I went to move the car and found the steering wheel all janky and then look and there was litter in the car. People had been hanging in it and sleeping in it...even tried to steal it.

By a certain time, I just gave up and stopped looking after the car as there was nothing I could do. When my friends got back the car was so very trashed. I just don't know what gives people the right to do trash like that.

But that's the thing - mine's locked too. I'm beginning to wonder if somebody's picking the lock with a paperclip, but surely that would take a while and why would they risk getting caught just to steal my mail?

Yea, I'm using an alternate address for package deliveries too sigh

Maybe there's a problem with your lock? Have you asked the postal service or building managment about replacing the lock?

They're coming on Thursday to replace the lock. However, half of me wants to leave it and post something to myself in a hand-written envelope as bait and arrange some kind of stakeout. They only take hand-written envelopes.

The last time it happened (last Tuesday) I was so pissed off that I phoned the police and it's been logged as a crime.

They're like wire baskets with locks on (rather than boxes) so you can see what's inside them. I saw that I had Air-Mail when leaving for work on Tuesday morning and by the time I returned home, it had vanished. I was in a rush for the bus when leaving for work - otherwise I would have unlocked the basket and taken the mail to work with me. I'm gutted that I didn't. I still have no idea what it was.
