If its December 18th and its Detroit, then it must be THE GREAT ORANGE OUT!!

BY NICHOLAS J. COTSONIKA

FREE PRESS SPORTS WRITER

The Angry Fan March. The Orange-out. The "Fire Millen" signs, T-shirts and chants.

With all the talk of protests surrounding Sunday's home finale against Cincinnati, there is an odd sense of anticipation among the Lions themselves.

"I think everybody in this locker room is honestly curious to see what's going to happen," offensive tackle Jeff Backus said Friday. "That's my feeling on it. How crazy, or how much of a circus, is it going to be? How far are they going to push this thing?

"It could be a debacle on Sunday. But I don't think it's going to get out of hand. I hope it doesn't."

In general, the Lions seem to understand the fans' feelings. They know the team has won only one playoff game since 1957. They know the goal was to win the NFC North this season, and they are 4-9. Coach Steve Mariucci has been fired. Team president Matt Millen is under fire for his 20-57 record.

When fans expressed their angst during the last game at Ford Field -- a 21-16 loss to Minnesota two weeks ago -- that was one thing. When they chanted and held up signs -- when one fan ran through the stands holding up a sign and got tackled by security -- it was a somewhat spontaneous show of emotion.

But this is something else.

"Now it's like premeditated," center Dominic Raiola said. "I've never been a part of anything like this. I can imagine it's going to be pretty crazy."

Cornerback Dre Bly said: "It's strange. With all that's been going down this year, the last thing we need is for our fans to turn on us. I mean, I see their frustration. But I would like to see our fans support us."

Some players are mad at the media.

"The fans have a right to have their own opinion, but it almost seems like the media is pumping it up," Raiola said. "The pictures on the front page, the radio -- they're almost encouraging it."

Raiola said people have to be realistic at this point.

"It's just not going to turn around right now, not after the firing of our head coach, what state we're in right now," Raiola said.

Several players have talked about treating this like a ninth road game. There hasn't been as much talk of beating the Bengals, a 10-3 team looking to clinch the AFC North title, as there has of trying to keep the game competitive.

"The bottom line is, we've got to go out and play regardless of who's wearing orange, who's wearing 'Fire Millen' shirts, who has signs," Raiola said. "We just can't let it get out of hand. There's going to be all kinds of stuff going on around us, but we've got to go out and play and keep that to a minimum, keep it a game."

Interim coach Dick Jauron said: "You can't pretend like you don't know there is a possibility that things are going to happen that are different for our team on a home game, but on the other hand, we have to play. ... We are the only people that can change that frustration, and we have to change it by playing better football and winning games."

Bly said he hoped to play well and silence the boo-birds because the last home game was what everyone would remember. Raiola said he hoped this was something everyone would forget someday.

"We want to win as much as they want to see us win," Raiola said. "We're not going out there to lose. We just haven't won. It's just disappointing that our fans are like that because I'm telling you, one day we're going to turn this thing around and it's all going to be in the past."

Dallas is the better team! The best team doesn't always win, ask the
Colts.
