society and the media do have a HUGE role in this

So, what are your feelings about why one message prevails over the other? And, yes, what is society's role in all of this? hmmm

i had just typed out a big-assed reply to this, only to find out that my account timed-out so i had to sign back in. pissed

lemme give a condensed version: society has always carried around the "nice guys finish last" mentality and some women fall for it, hook, line & sinker without doing one of two things (or both):

-- questioning why they must go for the bad boy when there's the nice boys as well
-- taking into consideration that the "bad boy" comes with a helluva price

...also, guys fall into the ploy as well, simply to show their friends and whoever else that they're not "soft" or, as some fellas uncouthly put it, "gay".

But why do people ignore the messages of what is some very popular art in favour of these messages? Do you really think it's just a matter of tonnage? And, when it comes to movies in particular, does not the message that the "nice" one is the smart choice hugely outweigh anything else? hmmm

It's because the other message is everywhere...not just in movies. It's on our TV...on the radio...in billboards...in print...it's used to sell all sorts of products and services...clothing, cars, diet pills, plastic surgery, gym memberships, jewelery...etc, etc, etc.
Being "nice" doesn't sell anything so we don't see those messages as frequently.

heterosexual women are fucking-up the world by preferring to mate and/or reproduce with alpha-males, regardless of their levels of sensitivity and/or intelligence. Are straight girls taking us all to hell in a handbasket?

confuse the world is getting killed because the non-alphas are not getting to reproduce and therefore not passing down their traits? what's the question exactly? Are we talking a general dumbing down thing? Or hasn't this always been like this in the animal world?

I married and mated with an alpha-male, but I am very fussy and he is a rare specimen indeed - no aggression, just a whole heap of confidence, drive and self-assurance. He will pass on his extremely desirable traits to his offspring.

Not ALL alphas are violent and devoid of intelligence and sensitivity. Not ALL women go for alphas (although all the single males past the age of 30 that I know are NOT alphas eek )

I go for penguins:

I don't go for fancy cars
For diamond rings
Or movie stars
I go for penguins
Oh Lord I go for penguins

Throw your money out the door
We'll just sit around
And watch it snow
I go for penguins
Oh Lord I go for penguins

Penguins are so sensitive
Penguins are so sensitive
Penguins are so sensitive
To my needs

Penguins are so sensitive
Penguins are so sensitive

My husband is probably not one really hmmm

though he is a leader in every aspect of his life - very take charge, and nobody would dare mess with him if they did not know him well. He does not care what other people think of him, but has no aggressive or violent tendencies but uses his intelligence to get the desired outcome. So what is that? confuse

Maybe we all have different views of what an alpha male is?

To me, an alpha male is someone who is physically strong, physically attractive and who knows it. Other men look up to him and most men aspire to be like him. Women find him attractive as he is also emotionally strong and seen as a powerful provider. Often he is wealthy.

That's what the term "alpha male" means to me.

I think women are attracted to them because they are viewed as having good genes, physically strong etc. Women want to pass these genes on to their children.

well I certainly agree with the misunderstanding part biggrin
I am attracted to that definition of an alpha "strong male that can lead a group and protect the female" because whilst child bearing and raising, the female is especially vulnerable and needs protecting. This has nothing to do with 50s romance novels, but a whole lot to do with reality.

I do believe the violence thing will be bred out. Men will not be getting away with it as much from now on because it's more out in the open and women are being educated on how to deal with it (get out of the relationship!!!!) and I am seeing friends of my generation whose boyfriends have been abusive ONCE and the relationship is OVER. I see things changing for the better amongst the younger generation - the girls seem to have more confidence, self-assurance and self-reliance than when I was at school, and the boys probably have a bit more respect for them.

most of this deals with male on male violence, competition for the female and such. The alpha male by his nature is violent, in every aspect of life his goal is to dominate other males.
