Don't buy Iams/Eukanuba pet foods!

Iams and P&G Cause Animals to Suffer Needlessly

For nearly 10 months in 2002 and early 2003, a PETA investigator went undercover at an Iams contract testing laboratory, where a dark, sordid secret was discovered beneath the the dog- and cat-food manufacturer’s wholesome image. Our investigator found dogs who had gone crazy from intense confinement in barren steel cages and cement cells, dogs who had been left on a filthy paint-chipped floor after chunks of muscle had been hacked from their thighs, dogs who had been surgically debarked, and horribly sick dogs and cats who were languishing in their cages, neglected and left to suffer without veterinary care.

I know...I learned about this last night in one of my classes. I was totally shocked. I'm almost finished with my last bag of IAMS cat food and I'll be switching brands.

Science Diet is really good. That's what I fed my kitties the first year of their lives. I think I'll be switching back to that.

It's not at all certain this is the whole truth. I have worked for the Swedish agent of the Iams company and the company's explanation for this cruelty (please note I'm NOT saying it didn't happen) is that the company hired a freelancing lab to carry out tests. They should have done their background checking better (or maybe they didn't bother at all) cos the conditions in the lab were horrific. All that's said to have happened on iamscruelty.com is true but the reasons might not be. What is true is that the Iams company ceased to work with this laboratory when this was revealed.

There are 2 sides to every story. Thanks for putting in what you know. I don't like to believe this kind of thing exists, but I know it can happen. I also know organizations I normally put faith and trust into make mistakes occasionally and also sometimes misrepresent things... I'll probably switch brands while I investigate further. Which prolly sounds silly, but it's one of those things I do. lol.

It's not silly at all, I think you're doing the right thing. The Iams company have been pretty open about this, try their official site http://www.iams.com/splas...page.jhtml for more info. smile

i'm glad the word is getting out about this. the irony of a company promoting its products as healthy for animals, while a great number of animals are suffering and dying in their "research" is just incredible.

that was really interesting. i've never fully trusted PETA. their heart is in the right place...sometimes. then other times i wonder if they have all their facts straight before they go out trying to accuse people. confused

Some organisations like that only care about what happened, not the reason why. I'm not making excuses, what went down went down but for sure the Iams company looked at their hired research facilities with a lot more scrutiny.

There are a few things you should keep in mind before making a decision. IAMS/P&G is a FOR profit company...of course they would go to lengths to defend themselves in this matter. Not to mention, they haven't defended themselves against the other accusations of animal cruelty at their hands.

PETA is a non-profit agency. What would they have to gain from making up lies about a huge company like P&G?

publicity and money. PETA still needs money, too and the more of it they can get the better. "non-profit" does not mean "honest". i'm not saying that i fully believe iams either or that i'm on their side. However, if PETA told me that the earth was round i would probably do my own research before making a decision. As i said before, their heart is in the right place...sometimes.
