Well, I'm guessing you're American, you really have to be British to appreciate this movie. You just don't have the nostalgia needed - first off, it's always great to see the Germans get one in the eye, it shows the fantastic ingenuity and never-say-die spirit of the British against seemingly unbeatable odds which basically got us through the war (and explains why the theme music is almost always played by the crowd when we play football) and of course was based on a true event.
Steve McQueen's character was completely made-up (they wanted an American star to bring in some box office pulling power) and technically out of place - but he's just so irresistabally charismatic it doesn't matter. The whole motorbike bit was added on simply because he insisted on showing off his biking skills or he wouldn't do the film, and he did all the riding, apart from the actual jumps over the wire, himself. How cool was he? "TWO HUNDRED AND FIFTY?!!" In the end (like in real life) most of the escapees don't make it, but somehow the film manages to make this disaster seem like a victory. Plus, this film has been shown on TV here time and time again at Christmas so much so that it has become an old friend to the entire nation. In that sense, it is like the Wizard of Oz or The Sound of Music, or It's a Wonderful Life. Watching it without having all that sense of history instilled in you, you're basically watching it without context and of course it's going to seem like just another old war movie. I mean, Dambusters is technically a terrible movie (and in dire need of a re-make I reckon) but it's the SPIRIT of the thing that moves you. Well, us. [Edited 11/12/05 17:00pm] | |
