Why are guys ashamed to buy Tampons?

Just one of the many questions I have about life. You see shows on TV that show embarrassed guys cowering as they buy sanitary pads for their significant others. The worst is of course when the cashier has to do a price check. "How much for this mega-size box of Tampons", the seemingly oblivious clerk asks as the guy cowers. In the real world, I have talked to some of my friends who say it is embarrassing for them but they cannot verbalize why.

My take: Guys for all intents and purposes have no use for Tampons. It is completely obvious when a guy puts Tampons on a counter that he is buying them for a female. So why in the world would a guy get embarrassed about buying Tampons?

Any thoughts...

They should rename them to something more palatable...like "Discharge Absorbers."

That wuld solve a lot of problems.

Many guys aren't embarrassed at all to do this... many are just happy they have a girlfriend/wife to buy them for!

I am so NOT embarassed to buy anything. I was buying condoms last month with my groceries, 3 kids in tow falloff the check-out chick was the one blushing, not me! My husband had to buy all the maternity pads for me after the babies were born, he doesn't care. biggrin he's good like that though mushy

Should we venture into the murky territory of guys buying yeast infection products for their girlfriends/wives?

Or maybe not.

I have not had to do this but if I did, I would probably just say I was confused and thought that I was buying ingredients for homemade bread.

my former office manager used this word all the time to describe practically everything. i refused to use it because i thought it was stupid.

and to answer the thread...i think men get embarrassed about that kind of thing because they're so squeamish about the reality of a vagina. nod

I like the word palatable. smile

As for the rest, there's a bit of the squeamishness, particularly with young men (inexperience and all...), but I think overall it's more a 'macho' thing. While buying candy, flowers or what have you is a romantic gesture, when a man is buying feminine hygeine products for his lady its a little bit different. They don't want to be seen as any woman's 'bitch'.

I'm not ashamed to buy Tampons for my wife because obviously anybody should realise that they aren't for me. Now her underwear on the other hand...

Any woman that asks her boyfriend to go and buy them is trying to embarrass the guy. Think about that.

it don't involve them...

i mean there's exceptions depending on the situation of course, but those are rarities in their own rights...

Quite simply, if it is something you need and he is doing the grocery shopping, it's on the list and he buys it. I think this probably only applies to couples living together.

even so, if he's not comfortable buying it then i won't put it down on the list...
shrug just me...
