Misunderstood cliches

There's so many cliches aren't there?! Not that I understand them all or can make head nor tail of what they mean. Take, 'never look a gift horse in the mouth' for example. Firstly, a)What is a gift horse? and b)Why would you be looking at it in the mouth?

What cliches can't you understand? Have you ever used a cliche in the wrong context? What were the consequences?

when you buy a horse, you check out the teeth first
to make sure it's healthy and not too darn old yet.

but suppose you'd get one for free, you shouldn't do
the check-up since it was a gift and you don't have
to pay for it anyway.

in other words the "gift horse" is just a good deed
or a present. something someone does for you or gives
you without wanting anything in return. and the not
looking it in the mouth is just not complaining about
it when it doesn't suit your tastes/ideas/expectation
