If you have to be gay to understand "My Own Private Idaho"... ...then I'm the straightest man alive....

well, I´m gay and it´s not that I don´t understand it but it
gets on my nerves. It´s one of the most frustrating movies that I have seen. Imo, the only good film Gus Van Sant has ever done is Drugstore Cowboy, and that was a long time ago

Surreal character study focusing on the friendship between two male hustlers, Mike and Scott, in Portland, Oregon. They live on the streets, do drugs, and sell themselves to men and women.
Mike (River Phoenix) is quiet, gay and suffers from narcolepsy. Abandoned as a child, he is obsessed with finding his long-lost mother. Scott (Keanu Reeves) is the rebellious son of a high-ranking family, who lives this life mostly to embarrass his father. Mike is in love with Scott, who still maintains he is straight and insists that his wild lifestyle on the streets is only temporary. Together, they embark on a quest to find Mike's mother, traveling from Portland to Idaho to Italy, with Scott picking up a beautiful girl along the way. [IMDb.com]

I just didn't get it. Maybe it's cause I was drinking. what wasn't to get? it was a movie about two guys who were best friends and one of them was in love with the other. plus there was a little bit of an homage to shakespeare thrown in just to be artsy. it was just a sweet little film about friendship, unrequited love and male prostitution. think of it as "turner & hooch" without the dog.

I think that the movie should be added to J.D.'s "Pretentious Bollocks" thread.
One of the most over-hyped pieces of SHITE ever. If you want to see a good film about unrequieted gay love, watch Chuck & Buck.

My Own Private Idaho is a brilliant film...and breaks my heart everytime I see it. If you didn't understand it, go watch "Gladiator" and "Titanic" again.

I get all that (and I enjoyed the stylized sex scenes - very, very cool!), but what's up with that big fat guy? Is he like the pimp for all the guys to go on their "dates" (I LOVE that term - never heard it before!!!)

That's what I figured, wasn't sure though... Oh, and the movie was very wordy - long monologues, big words, and fancy speech. I like the story about Mike and Scott, but the rest was tough to really "get". Did I mention that I liked the naked boobies?
