Nipsey Russell passed away...

Veteran of television, movies, and the stage, Nipsey Russell died Sunday of cancer at his Manhattan apartment. He was 82.

Born in Atlanta, Nipsey was 3 when he started doing a tap and rhythm dance routine as part of an act called The Ragamuffins of Rhythm.

His manager, Joseph Rapp, tells us Nipsey rose to fame in the 1950's as a nightclub performer. He kept everyone laughing at Harlem’s “Club Baby Grand” and was known as “Harlem’s Son of Fun.” In fact, celebrities came from all over to see him as his legend began to grow.

He went into tv after that, where he was the first black man to be featured on a game show, and later, he was one of the first to have a co-starring role in a sitcom, "Car 54 Where Are You?"

Later it was on to the silver screen, where he starred in "Snopes," "Posse" and "The Music Maker." He showed off a lot of his song and dance prowess playing the Tin Man in "The Wiz."

I loved his stuff in the Wiz, it even inspired me to record an old school cartoonish R&B type vocal performance. His voice was so cool.

OH NO!!! cry

I loved Nipsey! When I was a little girl I absolutely LOVED Nipsey...I had a lion puppet -- it was my favorite -- and I named him Nipsey smile

He was so funny and just seemed like such a gentle soul...

Rest in Peace, dear Nipsey pray You'll be missed...

I heard the news this morning and it broke my heart. Nipsey was truly one of a kind and he was definitely the king of limericks. His wit is something that is sorely missed in contemporary comedy and culture. R.I.P. sad

Nipsey was one of those good childhood memories for me. The thing I'll remember most is all his appearances on the Match Game.

Damn, this sucks. sad

A true poet "Rest In Peace" Nipsey

I remember seeing him on Match Game and Car 54 where are you?

"It is truly said that the good die young.
That's the reason for all of my fears!
So let us be evil and wicked and bad,
and stay here for thousands of years."

I was so sad when I heard this. Ever since I was a little kid watching the Wiz, I wanted to meet Nipsey Russell. He seemed like the coolest guy in the world. He had an awesome disposition and talent to boot. I will sorely miss Nipsey. We've lost a great American talent. Rest In Peace. I hate that I never had the chance to meet you.
