Thank you my friend. This is a refreshing thread in the midst of the wasteland of creativity that the G&D forum has become.

First, let me just say, that just like salons, Asians also come in several varieties. There’s the darker skin Asians who may have very beautiful jet black, straight hair. In addition, there are the Asians who have very nice curly hair that grows thick. And finally, there are the lighter skin (what caucasions call yellow) Asians who may have thick coarse hair, or very fine black hair.

Each of these hair types are actually, contrary to popular belief, easy to work with.
We can wair bangs, we can wear our hair short, and we can let it grow in length, and it all looks cool, if our stylist know how to do it right. I’ve even seen an Asian with dreads (one of my favorite looks), although he was a darker, curly haired variety, so it was easier for him to rock that look.

I’m currently wearing a very subdued fauxhawk (Asians rock that shit just as good as our white brothers). My new stylist finally realized that I am open to less traditional variations in my hair, so he finally recommended a fauxhawk to me today. And voila! I now have one.

The current trend for men in 2005 is more, more, more. More length. More thickness. More color. But, I will be the first to admit, I hate long hair on men. Very few guys can rock that look. And as for thickness, I have very thick asian hair. Jason (my stylist—we’re on a first name basis nod ) had to take a hot iron to my hair to soften it and calm it down. By the time he was done though it had a silky smooth texture to it.

As for color, depending on the length of your hair, you can do one of two things. First, if you have short hair, you should opt for a “shoe shine”. That’s basically the stylist or color expert (higher end salons will have a completely different person color your hair from your cut-shampoo-and-style guy). Mine color stylist’s name is Leo. Anyway, with a shoe shine, they basically speckle the hair with a lightening agent. Being asian, we can only get without a mid range auburn hue before they have to apply a bleaching agent. This presents a problem because if you want “blonde hues” that are lighter than what your hair will allow, they have to bleach your hair, then die the color over it to get a natural look.

The other option you have when it comes to color is to go fullon with the color. This is normally performed on longer hair. The cool thing about longer hair is that it makes it possible for your color expert to play with effects on your hair. The popular thing to do now is to do charcoal brown undertones towards the back of your hair, and then streak blonde around and threw it. It looks strange, but also cool—and it’s not radical enough for your boss to complain.

Finally, when chosing a style, always consult with the stylist about the hair you want and how it will conform to your head. My head is generally round so I have to have my hair cuts pull my face upwards. I couldn’t rock butt-cuts or hair that droops over the side of my face because, even though it frames my face, it creates a rounding effect. So find what is cool for you.

Lastly, don’t be afraid to try something new or radical. It’s just hair. You can always go get a different cut if you REALLY hate it. Or it will just grow back out.

I just go in there and say "grade 3 up to around 6 on top". 10 minutes later it's done.

As you say, it's just hair. shrug

I'm more interested in the head massage afterwards, but then my hair is receding so I'm not inclined to be nice to it. I just want a haircut that'll allow me to get straight out of bed and basically look the same then as when I go out.

I did have spiky hair at one time, that shot out in every direction all the way around my head. That was quite out of character looking back now. I do dye my hair sometimes but hate the all over gold/orange I get when I first do it (yes, DIY at home). Give it two weeks when the roots grow out and some sunshine and I like the texture and colour.

Anyways, that's quite enough about my hair. I think I'll leave while I still like girls.
