WTF?!?!? I am not a 100 percent positive you can do this but I believe people may be cheating by accessing the quiz and closing the page before completing it and then going back and doing it again with the answers ready. Can anyone else confirm this is possible? Otherwise I guess you could do it twice with different names. If there is a way to cheat people will find it. . [Edited 9/13/05 11:50am] I don't cheat.

[Edited 9/13/05 11:50am] I don't cheat. me neither. And i can't see how doing it with 2 names would help, as it would be blatant that's what you're doing (and you get different questions each time). No cheating - just sore losing.

you weren't supposed to knock me out of the top ten! I sucked at the other quizzes so chances are you'll be back in no time And I had no idea until right now that you got graded on the time! Guess I should read these things huh? . [Edited 9/19/05 14:54pm] 2010: Healing the Wounds of the Past.... http://prince.org/msg/8/325740

It still kinda confuses me. lol. the scores on the right are just used for calculating the points on the left which get added to the total. but i never thought about how the scores on the right are calculated, and it's just: Basic Score - Number of Seconds Taken. So... 10 right = basic score of 1,000 9 right = basic score of 900 8 right = basic score of 800 ... and so on. Then from that basic score, the number of seconds it takes you to answer are deducted. So, 10 answers right in 46 seconds = 1,000 - 46 = 954. And if you're unlucky enough to have lots of people beating you by one or two seconds (or even getting the same score in the same time but doing the competition later than you) then the points you get plummet, despite being very close. Hence (I guess) Fauxie's complaint earlier in this thread that he got the same score only two seconds slower than the winner but getting only 8 points. I think that's right - and I think that it's "the later the better" in the event of a dead heat, but i may be wrong (maybe it's the earlier the better, or in alphabetical order, i can't remember...)

Good work man Although the same score/time and score number yet different points awarded bugs the hell outa me. I think later is better in the case of a dead heat. I think that what you described just denotes your position though. The actual points you get at the end of the day is determined by the number of people you beat or by the number of people who participate. I sat looking at this the last week but got bored before I worked it out. Happy is he who finds out the causes for things.Virgil (70-19 BC). Virgil was such a lying bastard!

The speed thing - listen. One round i managed to complete it in 26 seconds.
Did i cheat? Nope. Am i a quick reader? Yep. But more importantly - I was lucky with the questions that day. None was more than a single sentence long, and i knew the answers instantly. Today, for example, I completed it in around 1 minute. The reason it took longer is because I had two questions which actually took more than a few seconds to read, and I had to think about 1 of the answers (it was about the initials standing for an American airport, which needed a bit of common sense reasoning - but that takes time). It's all about the cards you get dealt.

I think someone today scored 10 but took so long they are behing some nines in the points list. Shit, sorry, I think I am becoming too y Well, yep. If you get 10 questions right but take over 100 seconds to do it, then you're already in 9 questions right territory, assuming they didn't take as long. But I do think trying to go too quickly, and risking mis-reading a question might be a mistake, when 100 points are at stake (rather than a few points for a few seconds). But then it depends how others do. See - today, because I need to catch Carrie up in the overall tables, I am far more concerned about people who get their points between Carrie and I, than i am about people who beat both Carrie and I. Because the latter will have no effect on the overall score. If you see what i mean.

actually, i'm wrong on that last point, because the number of people participating each day has an effect on the number of points each participant gets, and this can have an effect the number of points each participant gets comparitively, i think.

It totally does. The more people who participate, the more points those on top get. But the number in between 2 people makes a huge difference too. And you'll never catch me, Froggy. |
