They are still allowed to call you if they have done previous business with you or if they are non-profit.
I don't really have any credit cards and things like that and when I donate money I never give out my real phone number so when I signed up for the list the calls stopped almost completely. I get maybe one a month. Did you know signing up for contests allows them to call you? . [Edited 9/10/05 12:31pm]

They had someone here on the news who signs up for as many lists as possible and then records every call he gets and he LEGALLY tells them to take him off the list and when they call again they are officially busted.
He then sends him copies of all the tapes and all the paperwork he recorded and names etc. He is very detailed about it. The fine is supposed to be like $75,000 grand so most will settle real quickly for like $5 grand. He made like $200,000 last year. He is writing a book telling people how to do this.

[Edited 9/10/05 12:31pm] Yup, I knew these companies could still call me if they are a non-profit organization or if I did previous business with them (but I don't do much business with anybody, honestly. I don't buy products off the phone or the TV much, or spend money wrecklessly). I don't enter contests either, so I'm not sure where in the heck these companies are getting my number. I think from now on, when someone asks me for my phone number, I'm going to lie and tell them that I don't have a home phone or a cell phone. That way, my number can't get "sold" to these companies. RIP, mom. I will forever miss and love you.
