France (Nantes) - Part I - Playin' My trip to France was based around a Jazz Festival gig in Nantes, Les Rendez-vous de l'Erdre (Meeting on the L'erdre River )
that my good friend and master trumpet player (Longineu Parsons) graciously asked me to participate in. Along with Longineu... 
...I have to thank one of my wives (JT) for making this possible. The trip started on an ominous note when the folks at LAX made me check JT. When they took her away, a little voice in the back of my head said, "They're gonna lose her." The 1st leg of my journey was the flight from L.A. to Atlanta... 
...where i'd meet up with the rest of the band. And what a band it is...  
 
Von Barlow (drums), Lindsey Sarjeant (piano), Lawrence Buckner (upright & electric bass), Longineu Parsons (trumpet & recorders) These guys straight smoke! One thing I forgot to do when I got my itinerary was to go online and secure a halfway decent seat for the trip across the Atlantic. Needless to say, I got stuck in one of the sissy seats for the next 7/8 hours. 
Luckily I made sure I didn't suffer the same fate on the way home. We finally get to Paris and find the gate for the short jump to Nantes. Here is where my psyche starts to bug me about the guitar. Waited until the baggage claim conveyor belt stops indicating no more baggage from the flight. Sure enough there's no guitar. Fill out the necessary paperwork and they give assurances that they will contact us as soon as it's found. I'm sick to my stomach but try and play it off. Everyone was very supportive and indicated that if it was at the airport in Paris, it would show up before our performance at midnight. Anyway, our festival liason Jean-Marc (who I didn't get a pic of) got to our hotel... 
And here's the view from my room... 
The festival personnel were extremely helpful...  
...Cecilia and Tony They even went as far as to rent a guitar for me and were prepared to restring it in case mine didn't show up in time. This festival was extremely well organized. They had a location where all the musicians were supplied free lunch and dinner meals each day of the festival. After lunch we took a walk around the neighborhood and found...

...for Colombian hostage Ingrid Betancourt Up the street from our hotel was another hotel where the foundation was sinking... 
...to the point that the windows are now crooked. Returned to the hotel after dinner to find... 
...JT had been delivered. 
On with the show! Didn't get many shots from the 1st night's performance. Jean-Marc, who took the pictures, informed me that my camera's batteries had run down. Each night's show was followed by a jam session with other musicians from the festival. Our sets were a tribute to Louis Armstrong or as they called it, The Satchmo Project. I'm guessing we were considered the top dogs as our venue was the only one that had an admission charge (5 euros). Dressed and ready to roll...

The 2nd night's jam session featured The Romane/Stochelo Rosenberg Duo...  
...2 fantastic guitarists that play tunes in the Django Reinhardt style I was really taken by how enthusiastic the audience was to the Louis Armstrong material we played and to the band in general. This is the 2nd time i've had this experience where people outside of the U.S. appreciate and understand Jazz much more than the American public. That's it for Nantes. Now it's time to party in Paris.
(  Now it's really time to find the energy to put that post together.)

The credit for the performance shots (outside of the guitar duo) has to go to Jean-Marc. I really could have used your photographic expertise. Turns out my digital camera's focusing mechanism is shot. (The 12 year old dropped it.) 
Btw, those are shots of "The Cathedral" in Nantes. I've got a few of Notre Dame that'll show up in a subsequent post on Paris (along with some  shots).
Didn't get to do any CR. It was all vino and this Rum punch concoction that Longineu makes.

Found that suit on sale.
Regarding the shoes. It is hard to find a pair of white shoes you'd be caught alive in (forget dead). 
I was bumpin' around J.C. Penney when I saw some white Rockport walking shoes. They reminded me a bit of the kicks Prince wore during the Musicology Tour. Tried them on and they felt like butter. Gotta take care of the dawgs.
They gave me the audio from the 2nd show on minidisc. I'll see if I have time to transfer them to disc when I go to work tomorrow.

Awe...  It is so weird... because I have now met theAudience, better known as Neal.
How refreshing this post is... it is real-like because I have met you in the flesh.
The next time we shall chat more extensively... for sure. I have my old trumpet (from my marching years) in my closet and my guitar waiting to be touched. ~Sigh... can a fine beautiful soul help a girl out!?
