France (Paris) - Part II - Hangin' Since i'd never been to Europe, Longineu suggested we stay over a few days and go to Paris.
He lived there for 3 years and still has quite a few musician friends there. So Sunday afternoon we left Nantes and took the train to Paris. A metro ride later we were in the Montmartre section of the city where our gracious host... ...and musician Sulaiman Hakim gave us his apartment for the next 2 days. Sulaiman is a well know musical entity in Europe, Scandanavia, the Middle East, the Caribbean & Africa... ...and some of the folks he's played with are Luther Allison, Percy Sledge, Roy Haynes, Max Roach, Sun Ra, Memphis Slim & Archie Shepp Sulaiman and Longineu decide to give me the 1st day's "Tour". I put tour in quotes because they have this ritual (unbeknownst to me of course) of taking Paris newbies on a trek that initially involves an extensive uphill walk. A test, if you will, to see if they can "hang". Well I hung and the good part is that we ended up at... ...The Sacré-Coeur Basilica. Outside of the building's architectural beauty, you get a tremendous overview of the city. During the 2 day stay, I got to see most of the things you're supposed to see in Paris. Including the Notre Dame Cathedral... ...a couple of long shots. And some closeups... ...The one on the far right is a shot from the rear of the cathedral. I found some of the common everyday things just as interesting... ...like this ad campaign that was all over the city. Or confirming that... ...Vincent Vega was correct. Or this guy on the street... ...doing amazing carrot sculptures. Or walking through the Flea Market... ...at Porte de Clignancourt Or seeing Hotel La Louisiane... ...the place where Jazz greats Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Bud Powell, Lester Young & Charlie Parker resided while in Paris during the late 40s/early 50s. But most of all, the thing that really made the Paris trip for me was hanging with and listening to stories from some great musicians. John Betsch... ...(Abbey Lincoln, Dewey Redman, Max Roach, Steve Lacy, Jim Pepper, Archie Shepp, Henry Threadgill, Mal Waldron) Kirk Lightsey... ...played piano for many years with the great Dexter Gordon and also led his own group. Chris Henderson. My individual picture of him didn't come out clearly. He currently plays with Sulaiman and was also Sun Ra's drummer. Final evening, sitting outside having just consumed a Chinese dinner, quite a bit of alcohol and hearing some amazing stories... ... (from L to R) Chris Henderson, Longineu Parsons, me, Sulaiman Hakim, Kirk Lightsey and just out of frame John Betsch. Longineu and Kirk... This was an incredible trip for me on a number of levels. The most important part was making some great new friends. tA France reverse countdown - T-Minus -1 day. Beautiful photos and memories... I feel you bro. I'm totally smitten with the place. Didn't want to leave. Luckily we've been rehired to do that festival again next year. Also, the promoter of the Nantes festival is in charge of all the Jazz festivals in France and expressed a strong interest in having us do others. Maybe I could scam a professional photographer into the budget. tA France reverse countdown - T-Minus -1 days.
