Lance Armstrong

There just aren't words for the respect I have for this man.
Have you seen the new Nike ad, where they show his press conference from 1997 ?
He's announcing that he has cancer (in the testicles, lungs AND brain) but says he is going to beat it.

And then he did.

I get weepy when I think about him. HE is a jewel among us.

I don't care if he's clean.
He looked death in the eye and kicked it's ever livin ass.
AND won the Tour de France 6 times...going for 7.

Plenty of people looked death in the eye. That's not what makes him "special".

Yes, plenty of people face death. Most succumb.
He did not. He would not go down.
If you appreciate strength and courage in your heros, then he's a hero.

So what does that say about those who didn't make it? They just weren't as lucky as he was. That's not why you admire him though. You admire him because he came back and won the Tour. I say he's a cheater, but people want hero's and they want to believe people can do the impossible by just hard work and a good diet. I'll leave it at that. smile

nod
Not many people found charities within months of being diagnosed with a serious illness either.

I don't know much about him but do admire anyone who can deal with adversity in this way and then turn it around and help others.

JoeyCOOCOO - look at my original thread. I didn't even mention the tour.
And yes, I think some people face cancer and die because they don't recognize the power of the human mind to overcome things, and the faith and belief that often triumphs over seemingly inevitable odds.

If he survived, but never got on his bike again no one would have been talking about him. That's the truth.

But if he succumbs to cancer as a result of him possibly being on steroids, how would you view him then?

Well in all honesty steroids do not cause cancer, they accellerate it. Secondly steroids aren't of much use to cyclists, except when they're recovering from an injury and only then you'd have to think of the ones that stimulate the growth of red blood cells.

But yeah, I'm pretty sure that he's using banned substances or rather, illegal performance enhancing stubstances which should be banned.

Well, that's debateable wether roids cause cancer but I didn't say that in his case, just that if his blood doping would cause his cancer to flair up and kill him.

No, really, it's not debatable. Anyway, it's not unlikely that substance abuse was the cause of his cancer in the first place. I doubt that his admirers care though. Idolization doesn't involve any rational thinking.

Instead of just giving your opinions, why can't you state a fact in regards to Mr. Armstrong. Like the fact that he's the most tested individual in cycling. Also that he's physiologicially more adept for cycling than most, the 33% larger heart provides this advantage. Has he ever tested positive for any banned substance? No!

Oh I see. So there's no way in hell he can cheat a drug test? Because that NEVER happens right? In fact ALL cyclists are clean that have never tested positive right?
