Are there really no Pride threads today, or am I just blind? It's possible. . .

Before I go out and commence Pride partying, I just wanted to stop by the org and say:

I think most of the gay or mafia are out celebrating or displaying their solidarity--I'm sure they'll be back with posts and comments and such. Right now, it's more important that they are actually out in the community standing up and being counted.

Thanks AB. I danced my ass off this weekend. I met lots of cool people straight and gay at a DJ barbecue. Went dancing tonight. Had a blast. My good friend came down from L.A. He's a hair designer for the stars. I hear lots of gossip about EVERYBODY. I'm sworn to secrecy.

Naaah. Our Pride here in A'dam is the first weekend of August. Holland HAS got all the rights you are still fighting for, so we just see it as a lazy party to pick up guys to be honest.

i am crispy and knackered from my pride weekend, and i would be disappointed if i were anything but. my sweetie and i went to our first pride parade and had a faboo time - then we lazed around afterwards and watched the new john waters DVD and slept off our sun-drunkeness, then in the evening we went to berlin for prince night, where i proceeded to drink and dance what was left of my sunburnt happy ass off until the wee hours, then i got up first thing this morning and hauled the shriveled remains of said ass to borders for a david sedaris book signing, which i rambled about elsewhere in the GD forum.

in a way, for me seeing sedaris this morning and watching the waters stuff was kinda as celebratory for pride as going to the parade. as most folks know, these are two role models of mine, not just because i like their work, but because they're the kind of gay man i admire - both have been able to make all kinds of audiences laugh - they're not ghettoized to JUST a gay audience (not that there's anything wrong with that, heh) - but at the same time, they don't downplay their gayness for the sake of wider acceptance. they just seem to wear it really, really well.

i think one thing i carried from this weekend is that it's no time to be cynical about things like a gay pride parade. we can't afford the cynicism right now - sure, it may be a celebration of "accepted", mainstreamed aspects of gay life, and the news might still focus on the leather daddies and the drag queens, and the corporate sponsorship may be WAY out of control, and blah blah blah blather blather blather...

...but as far as i was concerned, the PFLAG parents still got me weepy, and the gay veterans club made me feel a rare twinge of patriotism, and the firefighters and police and all the other awesome people marching and doing their thing (you know, the ones who DON'T get shown marching on the news...and SHOULD) freakin' inspired me as much as they always do...

...and really, that's what it's all about. and combined with enjoying some moments with two of my favorite gay role models, i reminded myself of what i do and who i am and why it matters.

so okay. i had a good pride.
