You could start by buying a couple of these babies:
The Technics 1200 is generally considered to be the best record player ever made and is still used by DJs all over the world, because of its quality and mobility.

You ought to decide... what music to play? Buying music is actually as if not more expensive than the equipment. Where will you get your music? vinyl or cd? Vinyl is expensive and hard to find...good vinyl. Old vinyl is really cheap. Crappy vinyl you can get for free. If you are playing something really electronic, like trance, you may consider CD as most music comes out that way. I dj ambient/downtempo. Cd is best for me. what it is you plan on doing...at home/with friends or playing out. Getting gigs is hard and gruelling. Are you prepared for that journey? Also if you need lessons...you should check in your area for someone that can teach you hands on. If you live in a major US city, I recommend using craigslist.org to find someone. Or Tribe.net...find a tribe like dj exchange...or maybe there's even one for new dj's and look there. For more technical based info...like the math and the ideas that are behind dj'ing can be googled. Christian Zombie Vampires
