Butterfly/Moth -can someone identify this insect??

Hey. rather weird question, i know. But last year I saw one of
these in our garden. I've seen a lot of butterflies in my life
but this one is a new species for me personally.

Last year I tried to take pictures but before I got my camera,
a bird ate it and left only a wing on the ground, sadly.

Now, today, I've seen another one. So that's the second one I
have seen in total.

It appears to be more like a moth, except that it comes out in
the daytime, which would seem rather weird for a moth, to sit
on a wall if full sunshine.

Is this a common species? Or is it a kind that's moved up from
the southern part of Europe due to the mild climate shift we
are experiencing in the last decade or so??

thanx.

yes, it does, doesn't it.

do moths come out during
the daytime as well?

perhaps that explains it

Yes. There are various types of moths like pantry moths for example.

I miss his little paddle feet the most.
the sound of his webbed toes on the
marble kitchen floor in summer.....

Definitely a moth. One set of wings lying flat (horizontal) with the body. Butterflies generally have two sets of wings and close them vertically above their bodies geek . Having said that I have absolutely no idea what species it is.

I just had a quick look at some web sites, and this doesn't really fit into any european categories. Is it as big as it looks? some of the sites have a "submit an unknown" you might what to try that - but what a monster!!
