"Family Guy" comes back...but is the time slot suicide?

The fact that "Family Guy" is coming back shows that if a show is loved enough, it can come back! In the case of this show, that was definately the case. It didn't just die like ohter sitcoms. The fact that the few epsidoes where were made were played on Turner owned stations (they air or aired both on Cartoon Network and TBS) and then released on DVD, where on both formats it did extermely well. Some shows don't even get that opprotunity ("Andy Rictcher Controls the Universe" anyone?).

But isn't it suicide to put it up against maybe the most popular show on TV, "Desperate Housewives". Now if they were in reruns, it would have made perfect sense but new episodes? They might take a bit out of the "Housewives" but I think Fox is going to be let down.

I love "Family Guy" and I guess I might be in the cult. I remember reading reviews in my school paper about the cult following the DVDs were getting and how it was worth the purchase. I watched reruns on Cartoon Network all summer and evantually bought both sets. I got Volume 2 used at a indie place....who would have sold it! And then Target put some of it's Fox sets really cheap, including this one, and I bought Volume 1. It's great but I'm not sure if my hopes are set up too high for the return. I'll tape it (and give "American Dad" another shot) but am not expecting much. I already have an idea it's gone to the creator's head but I really hope I'm wrong. I don't see it lasting more than one full season but I'll give it a chance.

Yeah, well Desperate Housewives sucks balls if you ask me. I hope Family Guy gets more attention. That's one of the funniest and best-written animated sitcoms out there.

My huge dilemma is that Family Guy, which I could watch all the time, is right up against Deadwood, which may now be the best show in TV.

I never cared muxh for "family guy". It is good, but just seems so late simpsons in being good but just too faced paced for its own good.

"futurama" was the real blow. WTF fox? I hate u.

"king of the hill" never was my thing really. Just seemed like a live action cartoon sitcom to me? Wow some gimmick?

I am so stoked, I don't care what time Family Guy comes on. I hate it comes up against Law & Order though.

I used to like that L&A:CI but with "Desperate Housewives" against it, forget it.

But not if you ask most people. I love it and I'm not the only one. I think "Desperate" gets a wide audience, not justa lot of people but a lot of different people, where "Family Guy" people are "Family Guy" people, so it will probably get a lot of the people that caught it on cable and bought/rented the DVDs loyally.

While I'll watch "Housewives", I'll say this. It's hard, if not impossible to watch reruns. When you see them new, they're great and really hook you in but in reruns, they're brutal! Now "Family Guy" in reruns. "Fricken sweet!"

I haven't either. The great thing about L & A, current and repeats, is that they are damn good shows. Great writing, great acting, compelling. If reruns have to exist, they should be the good shows only. Instead you can still find Full House on syndication mad

Yep. they are about the only re-runs I can stand. Not only do I watch all the variations of the original, I also catch the re-runs on TNT, too. eek

Well after hearing James Denton (that himbo) went to the White House Corresdpondents dinner, I watched "Family Guy" and it was funny as hell! The magic is back but I got annonyed with some things (we get it...Stewie and Brian as a married couple...zzzz). "American Dad" was an improvement on the first episode but still nothing spectular other than the line "She's being a real "Catch yoU Next Tuesday...". "The Simpsons" was also in top forum. Fox rules Sunday...too bad they are evil Republican scum!

eek So it's OK for you to watch Fox (evil Republican scum) just because a show you like is on there even though they are "republican scum" and support the President, but if someone goes to the white house correspondents dinner they should be totally ignored and run out of town because that is some how showing support for the president confused ?

I guess "Do as I say and not as I do" applies here.

 Does this relate to another convo?

In any event, I disregarded Family Guy early on because it seemed like it was a Simpsons clone that tried too hard to shock. As I watched more of it, which my sister got me into, I realized that these guys were good in their own right. I love the humor and the seemingly endless pop culture references and skewering of celebs.

Sorry, in another thread Vinny was slamming anyone who went to the White House Correspondence dinner as supporting Bush just because they went, but then he watches the "evil" FOX network because it suits him.

So as not to completely jack this thread, I'll keep it short: The WHCD is a bipartisan tradition so attendance should not imply support, any more than any other city tradition. But this Fox dichotomy can be explained very simply.

1. FNC is hopelessly biased in favor of conservatives and hugely profitable.

2. Fox Network has programming that deeply offends the (cultural) conservative ethic and is hugely profitable.

3. Fox's principals like for all aspects of their empire to be hugely profitable.

Which means . . . the dichotomy remains as long as each segment makes that money.

Not apt. Granted, Fox has heavy Republican ties but I don't see my watching "Family Guy", or any of those shows, as a direct watching a pro-Bush program on Fox.

You see, going to a Clear Channel event is bad because it sort of supports the Republican agenda. But I went to a Madonan concert, not a Republican rally or even a Toby Keith concert. Not close....

I don't think the timeslot is suicide because the demograph of folks that are loyal watchers "most likely" are not Desperate Housewives fans. I just can't see some middle-class surburbanite tuning into Family Guy, but there are exceptions.

I'm glad it's back....I've seen all of them!!!! Time for some new ones!!

The first one (that they showed after the Superbowl) was bad. The one last week wasn't awful. It's going to be a lesser "Family Guy"...I'll stick around for it but it's nothing special.
